FONTANA, Calif. -- NASCAR driver AJ Allmendinger made a special appearance at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., to pick up a driver and play some golf. Yes, golf. He participated in the closest-to-pin contest along with former PGA and Champions Tour Player Dave Stockton and new Auto Club Speedway President Dave Allen. The goal was to hit the ball from the center grandstand to a pin located on the track's infield grass.

Allmendinger beat the other two and ended up winning the contest. His golf ball was only 10 inches away from the pin. It's something that was never done before at the southern California race track just outside of Los Angeles.

"I've been an avid golfer for the last five years," he said in an exclusive interview. "Definitely the first time I've tee'd off from a grandstand. It's a lot of fun. Throughout the community of NASCAR, golf is a fun sport. There's a lot of drivers and crew guys that take part and golf whenever we can. I really enjoy it."

Allmendinger is currently fifth in points standings after two top five finishes so far this season.

"I try not to get too excited about it too early. The NASCAR Sprint Cup season is the longest season that any sport has. When you have 36 races, you can't get too pumped up about the first couple. I'd rather be fifth in points than 30th. We have a couple of good tracks coming. Hopefully, we can build on the momentum this weekend in Phoenix and Auto Club speedway next weekend."

He finished eighth at last year's Auto Club 400 in 2014. This year, Allmendinger will be driving the No. 47 JTG-Daugherty Racing Chevrolet.

"I'm pumped up for it," he exclaimed. "Last year, it was a packed house. Everything that Auto Club Speedway is doing with ticket prices starting as low as $35. It sounds like they are ahead of schedule from what they were last year. Great weather. I'm a California guy so I enjoy coming here. The race track has just become a race that we really enjoy coming out to."

It was a unique way to get fans excited about the upcoming Auto Club 400 weekend, March 22-24. Tickets are still available for all events and can be purchased online at www.autoclubspeedway.com or by phone at 1-800-944-RACE (7223).

"I've never been out here before," Stockton said. "The PGA Tour has had a relationship with a lot of the NASCAR guys. My wife won at the Ford Motor Company test track. We've got two good drivers in the family."
