Tigers' Brad Penny and Karina Smirnoff announce separation

DETROIT -- Brad Penny has struck out in the romance field, as the Detroit Tigers pitcher's engagement to Dancing with the Stars' Karina Smirnoff has come to an end, according to US Weekly.

A source told the magazine the couple, both 33, called off the wedding a month ago due to their busy schedules with Karina working on the popular ABC dance competition, where she and J.R. Martinez (All My Children) became this season's winners, while Penny was in post-season playing the American League (AL) Division and Championship Series.

Set up in 2009 by UFC Champion Chuck Liddell, one of the contestants from season nine, Brad and Penny have been engaged since last fall; the wedding was set for January 2012.

Penny has been a pitcher for the Tigers since January 2001. He is signed to a one-year, $3 million contract.
