NASCAR
driver Joey Logano meets a young fan at the Home Depot
store in Jackson, Mich. on Aug. 12, 2010.
JACKSON,
Mich. -- Joey
Logano was born on May 24, 1990 in Middletown, Connecticut.
He will drive the #20 Home Depot Toyota Camry in the CARFAX
400 and the #20 GameStop/Sport Clips Toyota Camry in the
CARFAX 250 at MIS this weekend. The NASCAR driver made
an appearance at the Home Depot store in Jackson, Mich.
to meet and sign autographs for 750 fans.
Logano,
who is now a NASCAR driver, actually started racing at
the young age of six.
"I
started up in Connecticut when I was six driving quarter
midgets," he explained. "I kind of moved down
from there to Georgia and ran Bandoleros, legends cars
and late models and Joe Gibbs Racing signed when I was
15 and the rest is history there."
The
NASCAR driver became the youngest driver to win a Nationwide
Series race at 18 years, 21 days old and the youngest
driver to win a Sprint Cup Series race at 19 years, 35
days old. The Sprint Cup victory came at the 2009 Lenox
Industrial Tools 301 at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
"It's
pretty cool, you know, it's two records that you've got
a certain amount of time to get them while you're young,"
Logano said. "That was cool to get both of them.
It's an honor to have a record like that in both series
really."
Home
Depot is his main sponsor for the No. 20 Toyota Camry
in the Sprint Cup Series. How important is that sponsorship?
"It's
huge, you know, any sponsor you have, you've got to treat
them as best you can," the NASCAR driver responded.
"That's our main deal. If we don't have a sponsor,
we don't go racing. We're fortunate to have the Home Depot
with us. It helps us a ton."
Logano
said he enjoys racing at Michigan International Speedway
because of its wide turns and straightaways.
"Michigan
is a very fun track as a race car driver," he said.
"It's cool because you get to move around the track
a lot. You go from the top to the bottom, anywhere you
want. You can really adjust the car by where you run there.
It makes it fun. Restarts are crazy, especially the double-file
restarts we've got now. We're definitely moving around
three or four-wide a lot."
The
NASCAR driver is currently sitting 21st in Sprint Cup
Series points and 13th in Nationwide Series points.
"The
Nationwide I'm not worried about because I missed seven
or eight races," Logano replied. "We're not
running for points over there. The Cup series we definitely
have to be better than where we are. I feel like we have
decent speed every place we go to. We just don't have
the consistent runs. Lately, we've been getting ourselves
in trouble and not having the best that we're capable
of. We just need to take a step back, regroup and go at
it."
What
are your goals for the remainder of the racing season?
"We've
got to pick it back up to where we were earlier in the
season," he said. "We were having a lot of top
five, a lot of top 10 runs. Now, we definitely need to
get back to that spot so we need to get some consistent
runs going again, solid top five, top 10 runs again."
Fans
waited in line for hours to meet Logano at the Home Depot
store, which is located about 17 miles northwest of Michigan
International Speedway. Not only were there fans from
Michigan, but also people who drove all the way from Ohio,
Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, other states and even far
away as Toronto, Ont.
Jen
and Randy Higgs drove six hours to meet the NASCAR driver
and get his autograph. They live in Mount Albert, Ont.
and make it to both the June and the August races at MIS
each year.
"He's
got a great personality, you know he likes his fans,"
said Jen Higgs. "He appreciates us coming out. MIS
is amazing. They devote, especially to us Canadians, they
put a day out for us. They're fan friendly. They're fan
plaza is amazing. Their tent city is you can buy whatever
you want. We've been here since Tuesday. Thanks to the
sponsors for remembering the fans are the ones that drive
everything and letting us get close to the driver."
Joey
Logano will start 27th in Sunday's CARFAX 400 race at
MIS. He will also race in the CARFAX 250, but qualifying
has not taken place yet.
