BROOKLYN,
Mich. -- Because NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series driver
Tony Stewart is used to driving at high speeds in access
of 180 mph at Michigan International Speedway every summer
the nine-year series veteran was cool under pressure when
he handled bank teller responsibilities at the Citizens
Bank branch in Brooklyn on Wednesday, May 2.
"This
was a lot of fun," Stewart said. "Having Citizens
Bank serve as the sponsor of this year's June race at
MIS is fitting because they were the first bank to ever
give General Motors a loan to start their company. Without
them I wouldn't even have a job and be able to race here
every summer."
Stewart, the
2002 and 2005 series champion and former MIS race winner,
took on the role of a bank teller from Noon to 1 p.m.
at the Citizens Bank in Brooklyn on Wednesday. The media
event provided advanced publicity for the upcoming NEXTEL
Cup Citizens Bank 400 at MIS on Sunday, June 17.
Stewart conducted
a meet and greet with Citizens Bank customers who did
their banking on that day. In addition, Stewart visited
MIS and witnessed first hand the new turn one grandstands,
which are nearing completion.
"We are
excited to have Tony here visiting with us," track
President Roger Curtis said. "Citizens Bank is doing
a fantastic job of being a first-time sponsor of a NASCAR
NEXTEL Cup event. Since they are the largest bank headquartered
in Michigan it's only fitting that they are paired with
the largest sporting venue in the state of Michigan."
The new grandstands
are more fan-friendly and will offer race fans premium
seating and amazing sightlines of the two-mile oval. Seats
in the new grandstands are four inches wider than the
seats in the old grandstands, and will allow fans to have
more leg room. In addition, all of the new seats are bench-style
with seat backs. The new grandstands are also higher than
the old grandstands so fans who sit there will have breathtaking
views of all the on-track action at MIS — including
a fantastic view down pit road.
