- Defending NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series champion
Jimmie Johnson has never had tremendous success
at MIS. In 10 career Cup starts at the 2-mile oval,
Johnson has just four top-10 finishes. Despite his
struggles at MIS, Johnson did have two solid finishes
in 2006 after placing sixth in June and coming back
from an early accident and going a lap down in August
to finish 13th.

- Kasey Kahne, driver of the No. 9 Dodge
Dealers/UAW Dodge, will attempt to win his second
consecutive June NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at
MIS during the Citizens Bank 400. Kahne started
from the pole and won his first race at MIS during
the 3M Performance 400 presented by Post-it Picture
Paper on June 18, 2006. |
| 8
- Dale Earnhardt Jr., driver of the No.
8 Budweiser Chevrolet, will try for his first NEXTEL
Cup win at MIS during the Citizens Bank 400, Sunday,
June 17. Earnhardt has four top 10's in his 15 Cup
starts at MIS and also has two wins in NASCAR Busch
Series events at the two-mile oval, including last
year's CARFAX 250. The Citizens Bank 400 could also
potentially mark Earnhardt's first race after announcing
what team he will drive for in 2008 as he will leave
the team his father Dale Earnhardt built, DEI, at
the conclusion of this season. |
| 7
- Seven top-five finishes have been obtained
at MIS by two-time NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series champion
Tony Stewart. Stewart, who finished third last August,
has proven to be successful at MIS, finishing almost
50 percent of his 16 NEXTEL Cup starts in fifth
or better. He also has one NEXTEL Cup win at Michigan,
which came in 2000.
|
| 6
- The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will
return to MIS on June 16 for the Michigan 200. Six
drivers have won a truck race on the two-mile oval,
with Greg Biffle being the only repeat winner with
victories in 1999 and 2000. Drivers who followed
Biffle's lead include Robert Pressley (2002), Brendan
Gaughan (2003), Travis Kvapil (2004), Dennis Setzer
(2005), and most recently Johnny Benson (2006). |
| 5
- During the 2006 race season at MIS, five
NEXTEL Cup drivers finished in the top 10 during
both Cup Series events. Kasey Kahne, Dale Earnhardt
Jr., Greg Biffle, Reed Sorenson, and Jeff Gordon
all experienced top 10's in both the June and August
Cup Series races and will try to repeat their success
this Father's Day. |
| 4
- Jeff Gordon will attempt to extend his
four poles at MIS to five during qualifying on Friday,
June 15 for the Citizens Bank 400. Gordon, who has
won two times, has an average finish of 10th at
MIS. The Citizens Bank 400 will be held on Father's
Day, and there is a chance Gordon will experience
a different kind of thrill than he is used to. Gordon
and his wife, Ingrid Vandebosch, are expecting their
first child the week following action at MIS. If
their baby comes early, Gordon will likely be replaced
by veteran Mark Martin, causing Gordon to miss his
first Cup Series race of his career. |
| 3
- The most recent woman to start a stock
car race at MIS, Erin Crocker, has raced three times
at MIS in the ARCA RE/MAX and NASCAR Craftsman Truck
Series. Crocker will attempt to make her fourth
start on the two-mile oval when she qualifies for
the ARCA RE/MAX Series Michigan 200 on June 15.
Crocker finished fourth in last June's ARCA race,
making her the highest-finishing female driver in
MIS history.
|
| 2
- Matt Kenseth has visited Gatorade Victory
Lane two times during his 15 starts at MIS. Ironically,
both Kenseth victories have come with very close
finishes. In June 2002, Kenseth finished ahead of
Dale Jarrett by only .131 seconds, and in August
2006 Kenseth finished .622 seconds ahead of four
time Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon in MIS' 75th
Cup event. Kenseth will race to win his second consecutive
Cup race at MIS during the Citizens Bank 400. |
| 1
- IndyCar Series champion Sam Hornish Jr.
will make his first stock car start at MIS during
the June 15 ARCA RE/MAX Series Michigan 200. Hornish,
who was fastest during an ARCA test at MIS on May
29, is scheduled to pilot the No. 27 Mobil 1 Dodge
for Roger Penske. |
