10 Countdown to Race Weekend
- Tony Stewart, who has won four of the last six
NASCAR NEXTEL Cup races, will look to add to his hot streak
of seven straight top-10 finishes, which started with a second-place
showing in the Batman Begins 400 at MIS in June. Stewart has
10 top-10 finishes at MIS in his career, dating back to 1998.
He also has two victories at MIS (NEXTEL Cup-2000; IROC-2001).
- Eight drivers, who are currently competing in the NEXTEL
Cup Series, have won nine NASCAR Busch Series races at MIS,
including five in the last six years. Kyle Busch (2004), Kevin
Harvick (2003), Michael Waltrip (2002), Ryan Newman (2001),
Dale Earnhardt Jr. (1999), Jeff Burton (1998), Mark Martin
(1995, 1993) and Bobby Labonte (1994) have all won Busch Series
races at MIS.
Recently, Ford and Dodge have combined to win the last eight
NASCAR NEXTEL Cup races at MIS. Ford has taken six checkered
flags, most recently Greg Biffle in June, while Dodge has
put a car in victory lane three times since 2000. Jeff Gordon,
who won the June race in 2001, is the last driver to win an
MIS Cup race in a Chevrolet. Sterling Marlin's August victory
in 2001 at MIS was the first time a Dodge had won a Cup event
- After finishing seventh in June's ARCA RE/MAX Series event,
Evernham Motorsports development driver Erin Crocker will
be making her second trip to MIS when the series competes
in the Hantz Group 200 on Friday, August 19. Crocker's seventh-place
showing was the second highest finish by a female in an MIS
history, trailing only Christi Passmore's fifth-place mark
in the 2004 ARCA event. So far this season, Crocker has raced
in four ARCA RE/MAX Series events with three top-10 and two
top-five finishes, including a season-best second at Kentucky
Speedway in July.
- Mark Martin, driving the #6 Viagra Ford for Roush
Racing, is competing in his final season on the NASCAR NEXTEL
Cup circuit. Martin has tallied four NASCAR Cup Series and
two NASCAR Busch Series victories at MIS during his successful
career. Martin finished second in last year's GFS Marketplace
400 and the NASCAR Busch Series races in August of 2004. His
last victory at MIS came in the June Cup event in 1998.
- No rookie has ever won a NASCAR Cup race at MIS. Could Kyle
Busch, driver of the #5 Kellogg's Chevrolet, be the first?
Kyle is no stranger to victory lane at MIS as he won the NASCAR
Busch Series event at the 2-mile oval in 2004, leading 90
of 125 laps in a dominant victory. In June, he finished eighth
in the Batman Begins 400 at MIS.
- If you don't win the pole, you may want to start fourth
at MIS. Since NASCAR's top series began racing at MIS in 1969,
12 drivers have won races starting from the fourth position.
Most recently was Ryan Newman during the June NEXTEL Cup event
in 2004. Fourteen drivers have won from the pole at MIS since
1969, including four by Cale Yarborough. Just eight drivers
have won from both the second and third starting positions
in MIS history.
- Paul Tracy, current Champ Car World Series driver, is expected
to enter his first ever NEXTEL Cup Series race and attempt
to qualify for the GFS Marketplace 400 on August 21 in the
#33 Richard Childress Chevrolet. Qualifying for the GFS Marketplace
400 will take place on Saturday, August 20.
- Since 1992, when the NASCAR Busch Series started competing
at MIS (13 races), only one driver has won from the pole (Jeff
Burton-1998). On the other hand, a series-record five drivers
have won from the second starting position, most recently
Kyle Busch in 2004. Other drivers who have won from the second
starting spot include Michael Waltrip (2002), Ryan Newman
(2001) and Mark Martin (1995 and 1993).
- It will be a day of firsts and lasts for the Rusty Wallace
Rusty's son Stephen will be making his first-ever appearance
at MIS when he races in the ARCA RE/MAX Series Hantz Group
200 on August 19. In contrast, Rusty will be retiring after
the 2005 season, making the GFS Marketplace 400 on August
21 his final appearance at MIS in a NEXTEL Cup event.
day, a new fact about MIS will be added up until the start
of the race!!
