Kyle
Petty makes an appearance at the ABC Warehouse location in Southgate,
MI.
SOUTHGATE,
MI. – NASCAR
Nextel Cup driver Kyle Petty made an appearance at ABC Warehouse
in Southgate to meet his fans and sign autographs. He will race
in the GFS Marketplace 400 at Michigan International Speedway this
weekend.
Kyle
Petty began racing in the Winston Cup series at the age of 19 years
old back in 1979. He has won 8 races and has started from the pole
in 8 races throughout his career. He has accomplished 51 top-five
finishes and 170 top-ten finishes. Currently, Petty drives the #45
Wells Fargo Dodge in the NASCAR Nextel Cup series. He is the son
of "The King," Richard Petty.
Kyle
had several career choices when he was young. He was offered scholarships
to play baseball and basketball. In addition, a Nashville recording
company wanted him to be a country music singer. He turned those
opportunities down to become a race car driver.
In
1979, K. Petty raced in the ARCA Daytona 200. It was his first race
ever and he won it. Later that year, he made his debut in the NASCAR
Winston Cup series. It was at Talladega Superspeedway and he finished
9th. In 1981, he raced in the Cup series full time. He ended up
12th in points standings that year.
Kyle's
first NASCAR Cup series victory came in 1986. It was at Richmond
International Speedway. He also won another Cup series race in 1987.
In 1992 and 1993, Kyle Petty finished the season in 5th place. Those
were his best years of his career.
Petty
is known best for his community giving. He started the Victory Junction
Gang. It is a charity for children with chronic and life-threatening
illnesses. The organization is in honor of his son, Adam who has
passed away. Petty believes that children should not worry about
being different and should be able to go to summer camp and make
memories while there.
