Race Recap: Team Penske driver Helio Castroneves
started the weekend by capturing the AAA Pole Award for
the Firestone Indy 400 on July 30, 2006. The Brazilian
led 61 laps throughout the race and was able to hold off
fellow Brazilian Vitor Meira to capture his fourth and
final victory of the 2006 season. Meira led for 75 laps,
more than any other driver, but was unable to stay up
front. The race saw only two caution flags (change in
track record), which slowed the 19 car field down for
a 10 laps. Due to the fast pace of the race, Castroneves
took the checkered flag in a track record time of two
hours, three minutes, and 43.7441 seconds. Dan Wheldon,
Tony Kanaan, and Tomas Scheckter followed in third, fourth,
and fifth place, respectively. Danica Patrick was running
in the top five late in the race, but with two laps to
go the former Rahal Letterman Racing driver ran out of
gas, ending her day in 17th.
