Eastern Michigan Hosts First Round Games
YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team closed out the 2010-11 regular season with a decisive 80-56 win over Western Michigan University. It was ‘Senior Night’ for the Lady Eagles in the Mid-American Conference West Division game.
The Eagles did their part in beating WMU, but Kent State came back to win on the road at Akron tonight, making EMU the fifth seed. The Eagles will now host a first-round match-up with 12-seeded Miami University here at the Convocation Center Saturday, March 5, at 4:30 p.m.
The winner advances to play No. 4 Kent State University Wednesday, March 9, at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. That game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
The EMU men's basketball game against Toledo will open the Convocation Center action with a scheduled 2:00 p.m. tip-off.
The Lady Eagles, now 19-11 overall, had four players in double figures, led by senior guard Sydney Huntley with 17, junior guard Tavelyn James and junior forward Paige Redditt each added 16 with senior point Cassie Schrock scoring 13.
Western Michigan, 9-20 on the year, was led by Miame Giden with 19 points. Eastern was hot from the field blistering the nets for 51.6 % from the field, hitting 32-of-62 shots.
Besides Huntley and Schrock the other EMU seniors honored by Coach AnnMarie Gilbert and parents were De’Ja Wills, Tara Johnson, Kristin Thomas and Raina Spencer.
Schrock, a four-year letter winner, set an all-time EMU record for career foul shot conversions with 541. Johnson also closed out her last home game as a four-year letter winner.
