FONTANA, Calif. -- It was a thrilling finish that kept fans on the edge of the seat for the MAVTV 500. The cars went triple wide several times near the end of the race. When it was all said and done, Will Power took the checkered flag at the season-ending IndyCar series race. Therefore, Scott Dixon was named the IndyCar champion for 2013 surpassing Helio Castroneves by just 27 points.

"It was very satisfying, I was so determined to win," Power told the media at a post-race press conference. "I went backwards, forwards...eventually went forwards to win. I'm very, very happy. For what happened last year, I had this race in my mind. I had the ovals especially in mind. Probably my best win ever."

This race was unique for several reasons. A pink flag was used to start the race instead of a green one. In addition, all Auto Club Speedway members wore pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month. Finally, the race featured a three-lane starting grid instead of a two-lane one like last year.

Power was the overall lap leader six times for a total of 103 laps. Ryan Hunter-Reay led 45 laps, Sebastien Bourdais led 35 laps, Helio Castroneves lead 27 and Charlie Kimball lead 22. Other lap leaders include Scott Dixon (5), Alex Tagliani (5), Marco Andretti (3), Tony Kanaan (3), Ed Carpenter (1) and James Jakes (1).

"When you win a couple, there all very different," said Dixon, this year's IndyCar champion. "The first one I was very young. When I was 22 or 23, it was totally different. It was a dream year. This year has been far different. Midseason we didn't think we had a shot. I had a conversation with Helio. He kind of pissed me off a little bit in Iowa. It's funny how we've been battling the last few races. I want to thank him for a great race tonight and keeping it clean."

The MAVTV 500 lasted three hours, 13 minutes and just over 42 seconds. The average speed was 154.867 mph. Power beat Carpenter by 1.4883 seconds at the finish line. There were 28 lead changes with 55 laps under caution.

As for the cautions, Sebastian Saavedra ran into Pippa Mann on turn three on lap 71. Carlos Munoz ran into the turn two wall on lap 101. Oriol Servia, James Jakes, Justin Wilson, Tristan Vautier, Josef Newgarden and Simona De Silvestro were involved in a major crash took place on lap 111.

"It's just very sad to be honest, we were doing such an amazing job," Saavedra explained. "The car was handling amazingly, just a fat tire. We had no expectation after that, just lost it on the straight. I did feel something going very wrong as soon as I left Turn 2. I heard 'Pit, pit, pit!' The rear right just exploded, and I was just a passenger. An unfortunate way to finish the season because we were doing an amazing job today."

Mann added: "I guess that Sebastian just had a tire go down. I feel for him and his guys. And I really feel for my guys. We were having a pretty tough night out there anyway, struggling for grip quite a lot. I stood on the brakes but there was nowhere to go and get underneath him. A tough end to a tough night. There's no one to blame here, these things happen. Unfortunately it's just a part of racing."

Other incidents include A.J. Allmendinger hitting the turn four wall on lap 190. Alex Tagliani came into contact with turn two on lap 210. Sebastien Bourdais ran into the turn three wall on lap 230. Eight laps later, J.R. Hildebrand stalled out on turn one and Charlie Kimball's car started smoking.

James Hinchcliffe recorded the fastest lap during the race at 218.501 mph on lap 127. Meanwhile, Power had the fastest lap by a leader with 217.910 mph on lap 244.

Detroit-based Chevrolet won the IndyCar manufacturer title for 2013. It won seven of the first 10 races while rival Honda won six of the last eight races. Chevrolet captured the first four positions in the MAVTV 500 yesterday.

"We are proud of the teamwork and dedicated efforts of our drivers, teams and technical partners that culminated in Chevrolet's second consecutive IndyCar Series manufacturer championship," said Jim Campbell, U.S. Vice President Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. "The Chevrolet IndyCar V6 engine gave our teams the right combination of power, fuel economy, and reliability that resulted in winning this prestigious award."

Castroneves came on stage and congratulated Dixon for winning the IndyCar championship this year.

"Unfortunately, we didn't finish in the position we wanted," Castroneves said during a post-race press conference. "But I tell you what, I had a great time. It was awesome. I went for it. I was pushing to the limit. I was driving my heart out there. The AAA boys did a great job too. It was a shame I got contact with the No. 83 and broke our front wing. My only chance was to be aggressive and that's what we did."

Next year's IZOD IndyCar series will begin on March 30 with the Streets of St. Petersburg. Then, the Toyota Long Beach Grand Prix happens on April 13. The Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit returns on May 31 and June 1. Finally, The MAVTV 500 will be held on August 27, 2014. Click here for the complete 2014 IndyCar schedule.

“I owe a lot of this to you, Dario,” Dixon said. “It's been a crazy year and I'm just hoping you get well soon.”
