Webber taps in buzzer beater
to win over Chicago in Big Ben's homecoming
The Detroit
Pistons beat the Chicago Bulls 95-93 on Sunday after Chris Webber
tipped in the winning shot with 2.2 seconds left in regulation.
After much
anticipation, Ben Wallace made his first appearance at the Palace
after becoming a free agent and signing a four-year $60 million
contract with the division rival Chicago Bulls.
As expected,
the crowd exploded with a mixture of cheers and boos after Wallace
was introduced before tip-off.
The crowd
increased their booing with every Wallace possession and he motioned
for them to continue.
Wallace
struggled on the offensive end, finishing with six points. He shot
just 2-8 from the free throw line.
The game
was evenly matched with several lead changes in the first quarter,
but the Bulls pulled away by the end of the second quarter. During
several minutes surrounding the half, the Bulls went 23-3 and created
a 16-point lead.
Guard Ben
Gordon led the Bulls with 21 points. Bulls forward P.J. Brown had
a career high 19 points and added 12 rebounds.
Pistons
forward Jason Maxiell and offensive rebounding both were the root
of Pistons third quarter comeback. Maxiell came off of the bench
and provided a spark on both ends of the court helping to decrease
the Bulls lead to three by the start of the fourth quarter. He finished
with four points and seven rebounds.
Richard
Hamilton had 22 points and Webber tied his season high with 21.
Chauncey Billups added 15 points and nine assists.
Tayshaun
Prince chipped in with 14 points and nine rebounds.
The game
could have gone either way as neither team could pull away in the
fourth quarter. Prince had a chance to seal the game with two free
throws, but missed them both. Gordon went to the line for the Bulls
and made his tying the game with 15 seconds left.
Webber tipped
in a shot taken by Billups to put the Pistons ahead. Gordon had
a great look at a game winning shot from the corner, but was unsuccessful.
Rasheed
Wallace sat out during the fourth quarter after slightly turning
his ankle on Brown's foot in the first quarter.
The Pistons
remain atop the Eastern Conference standings with a 4 1/2 game advantage
over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Miami
Heat will try to contest the Pistons four game winning streak when
they match up on Friday in Miami. The Heat are 1-7 without Dwayne
Wade who is out with a dislocated shoulder.
