DETROIT -- Thursday afternoon saw a conventional eat, meet, and greet at Hockeytown Café when Detroit Red Wings alumni Chris Chelios (current Executive Assistant to General Manager Ken Holland), Jim Nill (Vice President and Assistant General Manager) and Ryan Martin (Assistant General Manager of Hockey Administration) addressed a small crowd over Red Wings topics of the past, present, and future. The meeting was hosted by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association (DSBA).

The Red Wings will face the Phoenix Coyotes in the first round of the NHL playoffs. Game one of the quarterfinals will take place on Wednesday at Joe Louis Arena. The Red Wings also played the Coyotes last year in round one.

"When we're at our best, I don't think there are too many teams that are better," Chelios said. "We just hope that we can hit our stride at the right time and show that when we do play at our best, we're a very tough team to beat. You never want to pick who you can play. It can come back and bite you. Obviously, travel could be an issue. The last time we won the Cup we had a great travel. Then the year prior to that, 2002, it wasn't that great travel."

The trio absorbed and answered questions about what made the Wings a powerhouse year after year and whether the future holds a similar outcome. Assistant Manager Nill merely implied, “In the end, you have to have the best players.”

He added: "Just to have that foundation and people supporting us is so important to the players and the ownership and the city. We've been very blessed here. We've had a great core of players over the years."

Ryan Martin, the Red Wings' Assistant General Manager of Hockey Administration, discussed the upcoming NHL draft.

"The salary cap ends on the last day of the regular season," Martin said. "In our situation, it doesn't look like Grand Rapids is going to make the playoffs. The day following the end of the regular season in the NHL we can call up anybody that we want."

Before the big three took center stage, representatives of the community and the For'em Club highlighted what they accomplished in connection with the Wings organization. The Club’s Sue Lefever, a member for 30 years, hinted at the organization’s structure as an emotional one: “It’s a family, a dysfunctional family sometimes.”

Most people agree that Chelios will one day be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. As to who he would like to be inducted alongside, Chelios responded: "I don't know. I never think about that. When it happens I'll worry about that or if it happens."

Fr. Tom Griffin led everyone in prayer to offer good luck to the Wings in the postseason. Ken Kal, Play-by-Play Announcer and Past President of the DSBA, was the moderator of the event.

DSBA Marketing Director Bill Harrington announced the annual Golf Scramble, which is scheduled for July 11. Tickets are $150 for a single or $600 per foursome. To purchase tickets, call Harrington at 313-886-5500 or the DSBA offices at 586-558-9103.
