Tigers lose to Blue Jays in extra
innings to start new season
Despite
fans’ expectations, the Tigers lost their highly anticipated
season opener to the Blue Jays in extra innings on Monday.
The Toronto
Blue Jays got off to an early lead by scoring three runs in the
first inning against the Tiger’s starting pitcher, Jeremy
Bonderman.
Making his
debut as a Tiger, Gary Sheffield drove in Brandon Inge in his second
at bat to make the score 3-1.
The Tigers
eventually tied the score at 3-3 in the fifth inning with runs by
Inge and Curtis Granderson.
From then
on the game was a defensive stalemate. Craig Monroe displayed his
outfield talents by stopping Toronto from scoring two homeruns.
At the end
of nine innings the game was still tied at 3-3. With the fans prepared
to celebrate, the Tigers just couldn’t hold on.
In the top
of the tenth inning Fernando Rodney, Tiger’s relief pitcher,
loaded the bases with one out, and the Blue Jays broke the tie with
a run by Jason Smith.
The Blue
Jays went on to score one more run to beat the Tigers 5-3.
