DETROIT -- It was another close call for the Tigers at Yankee Stadium, but the pressure paid off for them on Thursday night to defeat the Yankees AND win the American League (AL) Division Series with 3-2 -- advancing to the AL Championship Series for the first time in five years.

The Tigers started off with back-to-back homers from Don Kelly and Delmon Young in the first inning that gave the early lead with 2-0, as pitchers Doug Fister and Joaquin Benoit and the Tigers had to mounted up their defense against Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez, but a base hit from Victor Martinez during the fifth sent Austin Jackson home, and it became 3-0.

Twice the Yankees had the bases loaded for the opportunity to even the odds in their favor as well as hit a grand slam to take the lead. Still, they did scored in the fifth with a solo home run, which was then followed by a walk in the seventh that led to a one-run lead for the Tigers.

However, Jose Valverde continues to show why he is named "Papa Grande" in the ninth inning when he struck out A-Rod, as the Tigers saddles up against Texas in Game 1 of the ALCS at Rangers Stadium this Saturday night at 7:30p on FOX; Justin Verlander will be the starting pitcher.

Detroit will return to Comerica Park to play Games 3 and 4 on Tuesday and Wednesday, also on FOX; times have yet to be announced, but tickets are currently on sale now.
