Thursday, 29 September, 2011 7:50 PM Second Sweep of Indians closes Tigers' 2011 regular season
|
DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers began September with a 12-game winning streak that led them to clinching the American League Central Division title, and ended it (the season, that is) with one of their famous last-second comebacks to sweep the Cleveland Indians again this month with the score of 5-4 on Comerica Park Wednesday night. The Indians were up 3-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning with a single from Victor Martinez help Damien Young give the Tigers their first run. Despite their struggles during most of the game, they found their groove in the second half in the bottom of the sixth, where Alex Avila's single led Miguel Cabrera, and scored again to tied it up at three. Thanks to "a wild pitch" from Cleveland in the bottom of the seventh, Danny Putnam helped give the Tigers the lead for the first game with 4-3. However, the shoe is on the other foot with Cleveland tying the game at four in the eighth, but it was blackjack for Jhonny Peralta to hit his 21st home run this year, and Jose Valverde struck out Asdrubal Cabrera to get his 49th save (a Major Record for Dominican players) and the Tigers their 95th victory. They began their post-season at Yankee Stadium against the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the American League Division Series Friday night at 8:37p; the Tigers will return home for Game 3 this Monday and Game 4 (if necessary).
