DETROIT -- The University of Detroit-Mercy Titan’s won four straight games to take the 2013 Women’s Basketball Invitational. The tourney is a post season event that started with 16 teams. The tournament doesn’t have all the hoopla and buzz of the NCAA ‘Big-Dance’ or even the N.I.T. but it did give the participating Division-I squads some extra games. The Titan’s beat McNeese State 73-62, as Detroit-Mercy sophomore Shareta Brown led all scorers with 28 points and 14 rebounds in the championship game. It was her third double-double of the tournament.

Brown was named the Tournament MVP in this fourth edition of the WBI. Seven Titan scorers contributed and it was a second half flurry that gave Detroit the title. Detroit had a 16-2 run to start the second half and that sealed the deal against the Cowgirls from Lake Charles, L.A. The Titans made 7 of 12 three’s in the second half. McNeese held a 30-28 lead at the half-time break.

For the winners, junior Senee Shearer had 16 points, freshman Rosanna Reynolds chipped in 11 and senior Yar Shayok added seven. Senior Demeisha Fambro completed her career with five points including an important second-half trey.

Detroit finished the year at 21-13 and McNeese State ended their third straight 20 plus win season, 21-15. The Titans were tough at home (Calihan Hall Fieldhouse) winning 16 times for coach Autumn Rademacher.

McNeese had three players score in double figures with twin sister seniors Ashlyn Baggett and Caitlyn Baggett ending their careers leading the way for the Cowgirls. Ashlyn finished with 22 points, making 8 of 19 from the field and 4 of 10 from behind the arc. Caitlyn scored 16 points on 5 of 10 from the field and 4 of 5 from three-point range and dished out eight assists. McNeese also got double figure scoring from Cecilia Okoye who ended the game with 10 points.

Ashlyn’s fourth trey broke the Southland Conference record for career three’s with 307, breaking the old record of 306 held by Lamar’s Jenna Plumley. Ashlyn Baggett was a three time All-Conference Team selection.

This season marked the third straight SLC tournament championship for McNeese State coach Brooks Donald-Williams.
