Wings take Game One in First
Round against Flames, 4-1
The Detroit
Red Wings took an early lead in the playoffs Thursday night with
a 4-1 win against the Calgary Flames in game one.
The Wings
brought the fans to their feet with an early goal by Valtteri Filppula
within the first five minutes of the first period.
They further
capitalized on their lead with a goal by Nicklas Lidstrom just over
four minutes later.
The fans
continuously chanted, “Lets go Red Wings!”
to cheer on their Central Division Champs.
Two more
goals were scored by Pavel Datsyuk and Mathieu Schneider in the
second period to make it 4-0.
“The
early lead is great for the team,” said Wings fan
Gary Balkus, who attended game one.
“It
definitely boosted their momentum for this game, and hopefully it
can stay with them throughout the rest of the series. They really
gave us something to cheer about tonight,” he said.
The Flames
extinguished the Wings’ hope of a shutout with a goal by Alex
Tanguay at the five-minute mark of the third period.
Playoff
tensions could be felt within the arena by the numerous scuffles
between players throughout all three periods of the game. The refs
quickly ended the brief sparring match-ups.
Tempers
ultimately boiled over resulting in a large pile up of players behind
Calgary’s net with only 1:24 left in regulation. If the antagonistic
energy remains between the teams this will pan out to be an exhilarating
series.
The Stanley
Cup hungry fans congratulated the Wings with a standing ovation
for their extraordinary performance.
The Wings
proved they were playoff ready as they ambushed their opponent’s
net and out shot the Flames 46 to 20.
Though it
was an exciting start, the series is nowhere near over.
Both teams
will take to the ice Sunday afternoon for game two.
