Lafayette. The coin, a commemorative silver dollar, was minted
in 1899 to mark the centennial of Washington's death, and was
issued the following year in honor of Lafayette and the Paris
Exposition of 1900.
4. The Great Khan
of Cathay. The letter was sent in the belief that Columbus was
sailing to the Indies. Columbus also carried two other letters
of introduction with blank spaces left for the salutation.
