1. John Irving, author of the book on which the film was based, and winner of the Oscar for the movie's screenplay.

2. Explorateur. It was named for the Explorer I satellite launched in 1958.

3. The nail on the middle finger on the hand most often used. As a rule of, er, thumb--the longer the finger, the faster the nail grows.

4. Vera, Chuck, and Dave.

5. The railroad industry. In 1967, after years of testing, bar codes were painted on the sides of freight cars to keep track of them and help match them with the right trains.
