This is a very special Townie Street Party, as we join forces with home-town boy, Bill Kirchen, to tip our hats to the beloved townie institution, The Ark, in celebration of their 50^th anniversary.  Bill virtually began his career at The Ark in the early 1960’s and credits The Ark founder, Dave Siglin, as the inspiration behind his transition from trombone to guitar. Today, Bill is recognized as a “titan of the telecaster” and has long been known for his trademark licks behind the Commander Cody classic, Hot Rod Lincoln. Bill will also be part of The Ark’s 50 Year Fling: Guitar Greats, on July, 25^th.

ROLLIE TUSSING & THE MIDWEST TERRITORY BAND
5:30 – 6:30PM

Adding to the all-townie line-up is Ann Arbor’s, Rollie Tussing & the Midwest Territory Band. Rollie is a guitar virtuoso in his own right, having won the National Slide Guitar Competition in 2001. Add to that the talents of Serge Vander Voo and Jim Carey and you have a sound that the band has dubbed “raggedy folk.”

Art Activity Zone

Explore your creative side with family-friendly activities that you can take home with you. Hosting organizations include:

Community Day Care Center: Create a wild and wacky hat. They are as much fun to wear as they are to make! Visit this tent brought to you by Community Day Care to pick out the materials for your very own paper bag hat creation.

Dr. Susan Gelmen’s Conceptual Development Lab at the University of Michigan: At the Art Zone tent, children can make their own glow-in-the-dark jelly fish with flowing tentacles. Parents can learn more about the University of Michigan Conceptual Development Lab directed by Dr. Susan Gelman. Our lab studies how children learn and think about the world around them through fun, interactive games.

Humane Society Huron Valley: Back by popular demand; create your own tie-dye bandana for your pooch-puppy or meow-meow. Your pet will look fashionable and in-style with his/her very own owner-created bandana fashion accessory.Participants can also decorate a bandana to be donated to HSHV and worn by one of our adoptable dogs while they wait for their forever home!

Jewish Community Center: Create a book! Spend time making your very own book you then can use to write and illustrate a story.

Ann Arbor Art Center: Create your own Keith Haring inspired pop artwork! By using pastels and stencils each work will be unique.

Leslie Science and Nature Center: Visit live animals & owls and then create your own animal craft.

Lee Studio: Two clay-based activities will be available to party-goers. The first project is a Make and Take, for those who want to get their hands dirty, build something from your imagination and take it home. The second option is a Majolica tile, for those who prefer a longer lasting keepsake. Paint a white tile with color using Majolica technique. Lee will fire it for you and you can pick it up at his brand new studio a week later. Pick whichever one appeals to your sensibilities.

Ann Arbor Learning Community: “Create a Bag” Use your creativity, felt and other soft materials, your sewing or tying skills and the support of activity volunteers to decorate your very own jute bag. Your bag can become a hand puppet, an animal with a head and tail, a flower with petals and leaves, or a fantastic creature. Felt provided is made of recycled plastic bottles and jute bags are a natural fiber (compostable!). Visit AALC’s art activity to make a green bag!

MetroParent: Dream big! Draw what you dream for your future and then frame it with a personally created keepsake frame so you never lose sight of your goal.

The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra: Hands-on fun with instruments! Children have the chance to get up close and personal with the orchestral instruments they see professionally played on stage. Instrument Petting Zoos inhabit It’s a fun and educational program, suitable for pre-K through 5th grader.  With trained “zookeepers, help youngsters bow a violin, pluck a cello, buzz an trumpet and blow a flute.  Learn how vibrations become sound, and sound becomes music.

Clay Work Studio:  Participants will be provided with a glazed tile on which ceramics colors can be painted on. Any design could be painted on as you challenge your creative mind. It is a fun and colorful way to express yourself.

Kelsey Museum of Archaeology: The ancient Egyptians made and used amulets to protect themselves against misfortune or bring good luck to the wearer. Make your own amulet to bring good fortune to you or a friend. Use clay to form the shape of popular amulets or use hieroglyphic stamps to write your name or message in the clay.

Ann Arbor Mile – Dart for Art

Rounding out the festivities is an all-inclusive one-mile run/walk which kicks off at 6:00PM and welcomes top runners to compete for cash awards in the Dart for Art Elite Division, as well as local athletes, families, or anyone who wnats to enjoy a run or walk in downtown Ann Arbor.  There’s even a corporate team division to see what company is the fastest!  Registration is open at www.AnnArborMile.com.
