LOS ANGELES — Hollywood Records artist Sabrina Carpenter picked up two awards at the Radio Disney Music Awards on Saturday. She won in the categories of Best Crush Song for “Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying” and Best Anthem for “Eyes Wide Open.”

Carpenter was born on May 11, 1999 in Lehigh Valley, Penn. She finished third in a singing contest held by Miley Cyrus called “The Next Miley Cyrus Project.” Her first acting role came in 2011 on “Law and Order: SVU.” Two years later, she landed a recurring role on Fox’s “The Goodwin Games.”

I caught up with Carpenter at the 2016 American Heart Association’s “Rock the Red” music benefit last Thursday at the GRAMMY Museum in downtown Los Angeles. She performed two songs including her latest single “Smoke and Fire.”

“I wrote the song in August and it’s the first song I wrote for the second album,” Carpenter said in an exclusive interview. “It’s been an incredible process. I love how people are digesting it. It sounds like food, but it’s not. I’m really glad that people love it. I am working on my sophomore album right now. That will hopefully be out later this year.”

She plays Maya on the Disney Channel series “Girl Meets World.” The third season is being filmed right now.

“I’m actually about to graduate high school and my character is just going into it,” the actress explained. “It’s very exciting to be able to tackle the subjects that kids are going through in high school.”

What kinds of surprises can fans expect to see on upcoming episodes?

“There’s surprises every week, it’s a sitcom,” Carpenter answered. “Anything they write down on paper can literally come to life, which is dangerous. But there’s a lot of crazy guest stars and just a lot of storylines that I think people will be pleasantly surprised by.”

It must be special working with Corey and Topanga. I watched them all throughout “Boy Meets World” and now “Girl Meets World.”

“They’re lovely and it’s an honor every single day to work with them and to learn from them,” she said. “At our age, they were doing what we’re doing now and we have so much to learn from them.”

I understand you started shooting the 3rd season in January.

“We won’t be done filming until the summer, probably. Yeah, I was literally on set today. I’m working everyday.”

Carpenter is also starring in a new film called “Adventures in Babysitting” coming out June 24. She plays Jenny Parker in the Disney Channel original movie.

“I’m starring alongside Sofia Carson from ‘The Descendants’ and it’s a remake of the ’80s classic with Elizabeth Shue,” Carpenter explained. “It’s an adventure of a lifetime and that’s not just the catchphrase of the movie. But it literally is.”

Look for Sabrina Carpenter’s second studio album out later this year and the third season of “Girl Meets World” premiering this June.
