LIVONIA, Mich. — With less than one day until the election, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump aren’t giving up on Michigan. The traditionally blue–or Democratic state–could turn red for the Republicans for the first time since 1988. The Great Lakes state has 16 electoral votes up for grabs on Tuesday.
On Sunday, Clinton brought in actors Tony Goldwyn and Katie Lowes from the ABC drama “Scandal.” The two Hollywood stars made several stops across southeast Michigan to campaign for Hillary. They began in Royal Oak, continued to Wayne State University, then visited Highland Park and wrapped up their day at the Democratic Party office in Livonia.
“She’s the most qualified person to ever run for the presidency,” said Goldwyn, who plays Fitzgerald Grant III, the President of the United States on the ABC drama series. “She has a lifetime of proving that she has delivered again and again and again for actual American families. The stakes are so high that we couldn’t not get involved. This election will determine what kind of country my kids will grow up in.”
His co-star, Katie Lowes, added: “There is no other choice. She also believes in the America that I and we all want to live in. An America that celebrates hope and inclusion and that every single person matters. Our lives and our futures are all at stake. The issues important to me are women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, the environment is huge and our health care. We want to look all of you in the eyes and say thank you so much.”
“As you always say Tony, the American political process works when we work it when we are actually involved,” said fellow actor Adam Shapiro.
President Bill Clinton held a campaign rally at UAW Local 652 in Lansing on Sunday. He spoke for about 30 minutes to a crowd of about 600 supporters.
“I’m glad to be back in Lansing,” Bill Clinton explained. “I believe Hillary will carry Michigan if we turn out. We don’t need to go back and reconfigure the social totem pole the way it was 50 years ago. There’s a lot of road rage out there because after the financial crisis, it took a long time before incomes started going up again. Now, we are finally seeing incomes start to rise.”
Hillary Clinton will deliver a speech at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich. on Monday afternoon. She also has President Obama holding a rally at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
Trump hopes to win over more Michigan voters in final days
Meanwhile, Donald Trump delivered a speech at the Freedom Hill Amphitheatre on Sunday evening in Sterling Heights. It was one of five states he visited just two days before the election.
“In two days, we are going to win the great state of Michigan and we are going to win back the White House,” said Trump during his visit to Macomb County. “We will make Michigan the manufacturing hub of the world once again. No politician will do that. They don’t have a clue. I’ve been fighting for the car industry for years. I want to share a special message for my many friends in the unions across this state. The unions love me and the non-unions love me too. We’re going to bring our jobs back and no more are going to be leaving.”
Mike Pence, the GOP nominee’s running mate, and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan spoke on Saturday in Holland, Mich. Ryan is now supporting Trump after a little bit of hesitation at first.
“When Donald Trump becomes negotiator-in-chief, we’re going to have trade deals that mean jobs,” Pence said. “We’re going to re-negotiate NAFTA for the first time in 20 years and put American workers first. We’re going to get out of his Trans-Pacific deal and we’re going to hold our trade partners accountable for the promises that they make. We’re going to bring manufacturing back in Michigan.”
Pence and Ryan will hold another rally at AvFlight Traverse City, Mich. on Monday. Then, Pence will join Trump for a last-minute stop in Grand Rapids on Monday at 11 p.m. That will be Trump’s final campaign stop before voters head to the polls on Tuesday.
Michigan is considered to be part of Hillary Clinton’s blue wall. If she wins most of the Midwestern states such as Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and states up and down the eastern seaboard, it will almost guarantee her the White House. However, if Trump can win Michigan, it would give him a path to victory.
