Apply Now: MIS Cares to award $10,000 in scholarships in 2017

BROOKLYN, Mich. — In 2017 at least 10 students from Lenawee and Jackson Counties will further their education with $1,000 scholarships from MIS Cares.

As part of an ongoing initiative to promote learning among students at all educational levels, MIS Cares will award $1,000 scholarships to students from both Lenawee and Jackson Counties. The scholarship is open to any graduating senior in Jackson or Lenawee County who is entering a STEAM-related (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics) field at a college, university or trade school in the state of Michigan.

All eligible students can download the official application at www.mispeedway.com/scholarship. Completed applications need to be mailed to MIS Cares, attention Scholarship Committee or emailed at donations@mispeedway.com. The deadline is February 21, 2017.

“We are happy to help local seniors from our community through MIS Cares,” track President Rick Brenner said. “It is a pleasure to honor so many academic scholars in their pursuit of a post-secondary education and we wish them a lifetime of success.”

The winners of these scholarships will receive the monetary award during the winners’ first semester.

Thanks to support from the community, MIS Cares has been able to award $24,000 in scholarships to local high school students in the first three years of the program. Last year, 14 students from Jackson and Lenawee Counties received $1,000 scholarships.

MIS is becoming known as a place for educational opportunity for students at all levels. Michigan International Speedway and Adrian College partnered to develop, Track and Explore, a first-of-its-kind science-related field trip program.

This unique partnership in sports allows hundreds of school children and college students from the region to benefit from learning about the ecosystem of the Irish Hills area, while also experiencing nature and conservancy that could contribute to their future work as scientists.

In its fifth year in 2016, all the spots were filled for the fourth-consecutive year as more than 1,400 local students came to MIS as part of Track and Explore to learn about the area’s ecosystem. Feedback has shown that the program has been an overwhelming success.

MIS will welcome students from across the globe in 2017 to the Irish Hills as part of the Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) competition in the spring. Students will compete in one of the most prestigious SAE Collegiate Design events. Formula SAE is an educational competition that challenges university undergraduate and graduate engineering students to design, build and compete in scaled-down, Formula-style autocross race cars.

MIS, through its Michigan Heritage trophy, also works with each of the NASCAR manufacturers – Ford, Chevrolet and Toyota – to annually award a youth-based, STEM-based organization a $40,000 grant. That charity has yet to be named by winning manufacturers, Chevrolet and Ford.

MIS Cares is a donor advised fund of the NASCAR Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit entity. MIS Cares’ mission is to assist and inspire youth within our community.

Nestled in the lush Irish Hills of Southeastern Michigan, Michigan International Speedway is NASCAR’s fastest racetrack. It has been the love of NASCAR racing and the thrill of a great time for race fans and drivers alike for nearly 50 years.
