Livonia Planning Commission approves new BJ’s Restaurant; heads to city council

LIVONIA, Mich. — BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse submitted a proposal to demolish the existing Champps Americana Restaurant at 19470 Haggerty Road a construct a new, full service restaurant. The petition was approved by the Livonia Planning Commission on Tuesday evening.

The site plan includes 7,567 sq.-ft. of dining space with an outdoor patio. That would increase the seating count from the current 249 patrons to 295 customers. In addition, BJ’s is looking to obtain a Class C liquor license. The restaurant hopes to sell Michigan-made beers, however it will not brew them at this location.

“It’s really a beautiful restaurant and am proud to bring it to Livonia,” said Joan Legay, director of property development at BJ’s. “This will be our second restaurant built with this prototype. It will have the two-tone brick exterior. The windows are taller, there is more natural light pouring in. There’s a really good looking corner patio element and it has an indoor/outdoor feel to it.”

BJ’s is known for its extensive menu of American cuisine including pizza, salads, entrees, burgers, sandwiches, tacos, pasta and steaks. They also serve appetizers, soups, a kid’s menu, lunch specials and a wide selection of desserts. BJ’s offers its premium rewards program for frequent diners.

“We’re a family, full-service restaurant with a full menu,” Legay explained. “We also brew our own brews. We won’t be brewing at this location. We’ll have many taps–12 of them will be BJ’s own beers. We’ll also showcase local brewers as well. We like to do that when we come into the community to highlight some of the local favorites and give them some of the attention as well. The average guest check is $14 per person.”

Headquartered in Huntington Beach, Calif., BJ’s Restaurants, Inc. currently owns and operates 191 casual dining restaurants under the BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse®, BJ’s Restaurant & Brewery®, BJ’s Pizza & Grill® and BJ’s Grill® brand names.

The BJ’s Restaurant petition will head to the Livonia City Council for final approval on Monday, May 22 at 7:00 p.m. Plans are also moving forward on another BJ’s at the former Linens N’ Things store on Lakeside Circle in Sterling Heights, Mich.

Legay said BJ’s would like to open for business in Livonia on or before the first quarter of 2018.
