DETROIT and FLINT, Mich. — The Mike Morse Law Firm will provide 30,000+ backpacks filled with brand new school supplies to students in both Detroit and Flint public schools for the 2017-2018 school year. This newly expanded project will benefit more children, families and teachers than ever before.
For the first time since the Project Backpack initiative began four years ago, the firm will serve tens of thousands of students, teachers and families in two major Michigan school districts – Detroit Public School Community District and Flint Community Schools. During the first week of the school year, 25,000 backpacks filled with school supplies will be distributed to all DPSCD students in grades K-5. In Flint, 5,200 backpacks will go to all students in grades K-12.
“We are proud to expand our efforts and do even more to help level the playing field in our schools,” said attorney Mike Morse. “Over the last four years it has been rewarding to hear from children and families who tell us these supplies add excitement, give students an extra boost of confidence, and even help improve grades. We know that many teachers pay out of their own pockets to provide paper, pencils and other items. We set out to change that.”
“We know that not having the school supplies they need is one of the primary reasons students don’t show up for the first day of school,” added Flint Community Schools Superintendent Bilal Tawwab. “Flint Community Schools is overwhelmingly grateful to the Mike Morse Law Firm for donating backpacks to every single student in our district, eliminating that concern for families.”
This year in Detroit, the firm is also donating 3,000 “Teacher Totes” filled with basic classroom supplies and 6,000 Pre-K “Starter Kits” with pencils, glue sticks, crayons, markers and more.
“This annual donation helps to remove financial burdens for our K-5 parents who might have difficulty with basic necessities; and it adds a small token of appreciation for our teachers,” said Nikolai Vitti, Superintendent, Detroit Public Schools Community Detroit. “It is our hope that we can continue to identify ways to provide essential resources to support teaching and learning,”
Including the current donation, the Mike Morse Law Firm has provided more than 85,000 backpacks to Michiganstudents since 2013. The goal is to continue to expand Project Backpack each year.
Backpacks and supplies will be distributed at the start of school in September. Each student will receive a backpack, folders, notebooks, pencils, a pencil sharpener, eraser, scissors, glue, crayons, and more. The supplies are age and grade appropriate.
