For the past five years, Kercheval Ave. between the cities of Detroit and Grosse Pointe Park have been closed to traffic. Large flower pots blocked the street from cars entering from either direction. Many people saw it as a sign of division between the two cities. Grosse Pointe Park is 85 percent white while Detroit is 83 percent black, according to the latest Census data. Right now, traffic is open from Detroit to Grosse Pointe Park, but not the other way around. Officials from the two cities have reached an agreement to reopen traffic in both directions along Kercheval Ave. It is expected to happen before August 1, 2019.
