Charlize Theron has been known for playing empowered female characters who are fast and furious, and fierce and fearless: Furiosa (Mad Max: Fury Road), Lorraine Broughton (Atomic Blonde), Cipher (The Fate of The Furious and F9), Queen Ravenna (Snow White and The Huntsman and The Huntsman: Winter’s War), Mary Embrey (Hancock), Andy (The Old Guard), and many more.
Born in South Africa on August 7, 1975, Charlize wowed critics and audiences worldwide with her powerhouse performance as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in the 2003 film Monster. Directed by Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman 1984), the film earned Charlize the much-deserved Oscar for Best Actress. She was nominated twice in that same category: as iron mine worker Josey Aimes in 2005’s North Country and as reporter Megyn Kelly in 2019’s Bombshell. Like Monster, North Country and Bombshell were based on true stories. This time, though, Charlize’s characters set out to expose sexual harassment in the work force.
Charlize continued to impress critics with roles such as self-centered alcoholic writer Mavis Gary in 2011’s Young Adult and U.S Secretary of State turned Presidential candidate Charlotte Field in the 2019 romantic comedy Long Shot opposite Seth Rogen.
Last summer, Charlize cemented her status as the Queen of action films with the Netflix superhero blockbuster The Old Guard. Based on the comic book, the film followed Charlize as the team leader of immortal warriors who wanders the Earth for centuries with the purpose to fight for what they think is right. When Andy (Charlize) and the others discovers a new potential, they end being targeted by a group who seeks their immortality for nefarious reasons.
This fall, Charlize will lend her voice once more as Morticia Addams in The Addams Family 2, the sequel to the 2019 animated hit. A sequel to The Old Guard is already underway; with the script finished, production is set for sometime next year. There is also talks of a Fast and Furious spin-off with Charlize reprising her role as cyber-terrorist Cipher.
An ambassador of peace for the United Nations (UN), Charlize Theron is the loving, devoted mother to daughters Jackson and August.
