The Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear will be hosted on Belle Isle, June 3-5, 2022. The event will feature the cars of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES racing in the Chevrolet INDYCAR Grand Prix, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires and Masters Endurance Legends USA. The event is collectively referred to as the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear.

RACE HISTORY:
The first Detroit Grand Prix was in 1982 and it started as a Formula One race through the streets of downtown Detroit before becoming a CART-sanctioned race in 1989. The race moved to Belle Isle in 1992 continuing under the CART/Champ Car banner until 2001. After the success of the Super Bowl in Detroit in 2006, Roger Penske and the Downtown Detroit Partnership (DDP) teamed up to bring an annual national sporting event to the city of Detroit and spearheaded the return of the Grand Prix in 2007 on Belle Isle. After challenging economic times delayed the event after the 2008 season, the Grand Prix returned in 2012 with Chevrolet as the title sponsor of the event and the current promotional group as a subsidiary of the DDP. The 2019 event marked the 30th Grand Prix in Detroit’s history. The event was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but returned in 2021 with limited attendance due to health and safety protocols in place for the event.
WINNERS IN THE RETURN OF THE DETROIT GRAND PRIX:
The 2021 Chevrolet Dual in Detroit featured two drivers that experienced their first NTT INDYCAR SERIES Detroit victories. Chip Ganassi Racing’s Marcus Ericsson won his first career INDYCAR race by taking the top step in the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit I on Saturday. On Sunday, Patricio O’Ward from Arrow McLaren SP won the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit II for his second career INDYCAR win as he became the first driver to post multiple wins in the 2021 INDYCAR season while capturing the lead in the series’ championship chase.
In the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the No. 01 Cadillac for Chip Ganassi Racing took home the win in the Prototype class of the Chevrolet Sports Car Classic. Teammates Renger van der Zande and Kevin Magnussen helped produce a Saturday sweep for the Ganassi team, combined with Ericsson’s INDYCAR win. The victory also marked the team’s first triumph in the IMSA Prototype class this season, the first series win for Magnussen and the 15th IMSA victory for van der Zande. In the GTD class, the No. 23 Heart of Racing team scored its first win and the first IMSA victory for drivers Ross Gunn and Roman de Angelis. Corvette Racing made its first appearance on Belle Isle since 2008 as the team based in metro Detroit competed with both of C8.R GTLM entries. The No. 4 Corvette of Nick Tandy and Tommy Milner beat out the No. 3 Corvette driven by Jordan Taylor and Antonio Garcia in the exhibition event.
Indy Lights returned to Belle Isle for the first time since 2012 for a doubleheader weekend in the Motor City. Andretti Autosport driver Kyle Kirkwood swept the weekend, leading 54 of 55 laps in the two races as he rose to third place in the championship standings after a Detroit double play.

Fan activities return in full force for the 2022 Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear. Interactive displays, music, merchandise and great food and beverage options will add to the off-track excitement on Belle Isle in the Midway, the Meijer Fan Zone and in the NEW Fountain Fan Zone adjacent to the Autotrader Winner’s Circle, located at the historic Scott Fountain.

TRANSPORTATION:
Transportation for the 2022 Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear will once again feature the park and ride shuttle service to and from Belle Isle.
There is no public parking available on Belle Isle for Grand Prix attendees, but event guests are encouraged to utilize the convenient and efficient park and ride system. COMERICA BANK FREE PRIX DAY:
Carrying on a tradition that began with the first Detroit Grand Prix in 1982, Comerica Bank Free Prix Day will return to Belle Isle in 2022. Fans will be welcome to attend all activities at the Grand Prix on Friday, June 3 free of charge.
FANS ACCESS TO THE FIFTH THIRD BANK PADDOCK:
All Grand Prix ticketholders will once again have access to the Fifth Third Bank Paddock at the 2022 Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear – known as the “locker room” of motorsports. The paddock area includes the garages where race teams work on their cars throughout the weekend, providing a unique behind-the-scenes experience for fans on Belle Isle.
BELLE ISLE IMPROVEMENTS:
Since the Grand Prix returned to Belle Isle in 2007, event organizers and contributing partners have made over $13.5 million in lasting improvements to Belle Isle. These enhancements include:
• Repairing damaged lighting and drainage systems
• Renovating the Scott Fountain, the Belle Isle Casino and the Belle Isle Boat House
• Repaving, repairing and maintaining island roadways
• Building new pedestrian bridges and playscapes
• Installing new LED lights on the MacArthur Bridge and around the Scott Fountain
• Enhancing paved areas for park visitors to enjoy more parking, community events and activities year-round
• Creating pedestrian walkways and new bicycle lanes on Belle Isle
• Raising more than $5 million in funds for the Belle Isle Conservancy and their mission to preserve, protect and restore Belle Isle Park through the annual Grand Prixmiere charity gala.
COMMUNITY IMPACT:
The Grand Prix has annually generated over $45 million in total spending annually for the Metro Detroit region. An independent study concluded the Grand Prix created an estimated $58 million in total spending for the Metro Detroit region in 2017. Over 95,000 people attended the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear events in 2007, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.
PARTNERS:
The Grand Prix welcomed support from 60 local and national partners in 2021. The total included eight new partners and 26 partners that have been part of the race since the event returned in 2012.
BACK TO THE STREETS IN 2023:
In 2023, the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear will return to its original home, on the streets of Downtown Detroit. With a 1.7-mile street circuit incorporating Jefferson Avenue and Atwater Street, along Detroit’s Riverfront, the Grand Prix will bring a festival-like atmosphere to the city. The Downtown Grand Prix will embrace the local community with more than half of the event’s footprint open and accessible to everyone for free, including key fan activation areas in Hart Plaza, Spirit Plaza and Riverfront Plaza.
