Detroit — Tina Fey’s “Mean Girls” is now playing at the Fisher Theatre from June 7-19, 2022.  This is the first show of the Fisher Theatre’s subscription season.

Mike Duggan, Mayor of the City of Detroit, presented the theatre spokesman with a plaque commemorating the special occasion. He declared June 8 as “Mean Girls” day in the city.

This is a story of Cady Heron (English Bernhardt) who lived in Africa with her parents and she decides to move to Chicago.  She enrolls in North Shore High School, and as a newbie at the school tries to figure out where she fits in.  She runs into the Plastics, a trio of frenemies, led by Regina George (Nadina Hassan), the Queen Bee.

As Cady tries to fit in with the clique, she finds that it backfires with some backstabbing when she falls for Regina’s boyfriend, Aaron (Adante Carter).  The songs featured were “Where do you belong?,” “What’s wrong with me?” and “Fearless.”  So appropriate for teenagers as they face high school.

For high school, some outfits were a little on the raunchy side of fashion.  The 90-minute show with a 15-minute intermission contained strobe lights, theatrical haze and high-decimal sound effects.  The curtain went down for about a minute citing technical difficulties.

Mean Girls was produced by Lorne Michaels and directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw.  The music is by Jeff Richmond, a three-time Emmy Award winner and the lyrics is by two-time Tony Award nominee Nell Benjamin.

This musical was entertaining, fast paced and with plenty of humor.  The singing and dancing is lively and energetic.  Perhaps the musical teaches you one thing and that is, to be yourself.
