After a lengthy, valiant battle with cancer, Shannon Doherty has died.

The actress is best known for her roles on Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed.

Shannon began her career on Little House On The Prairie, followed by guest appearances on shows such as Airwolf. She went on to became a regular on NBC’s Our House (1986-88) opposite Deidre Hall, Chad Allen, and Wilford Brimley.

But her breakthrough came as one of the quartet of Heathers, the 1989 teen black comedy cult classic alongside Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. A year later came FOX’s Beverly Hills90210. For four seasons, Shannon was Brenda Walsh, the twin sister of Brandon (Jason Priestley) Walsh. Dealing with sensitive and topical issues, 90210 became the quintessential teen drama of the 1990s. Shannon reprised her role in the spinoffs 90210 and BH90210.

She continued to put viewers under her spell as Prudence “Prue” Halliwell on Charmed for three seasons on the WB from 1998 to 2001. Having the highest-rated series debut with over 7.7 million viewers, the supernatural drama was part of the “female empowerment” era on television with Shannon playing the eldest of three sisters alongside Holly Marie Combs as Piper and Alyssa Milano as Phoebe. As the Charmed Ones, they are the most powerful witches ever: protecting the innocent and vanquishing the forces of evil.

Shannon also starred in a series of made-for-TV movies, and directed three episodes of Charmed.

Shannon Doherty was 53 years old.
