Detroit — Four-time Tony award winning,  “MJ: The Musical” is now playing at the Fisher Theater in Detroit for 13 days, starting October 23-November 3.  A brilliant and magical show for all ages.

The story begins as the older Michael Jackson (Jamaal Fields-Green) overlooks the journey of his childhood living in Gary, Indiana when they became the Jackson 5.  We see the child Michael (Josiah Benson) who is influenced by his strict father Joseph (Devin Bowles) on wanting him to be the best.  As the Jackson 5, they performed at the Regal Theater in Chicago, Apollo in New York and the Cotton Club in Las Vegas.

As Michael gets older, he gets introduced to MTV Reporter Rachel (Cecelia Petrush) and her cameraman Alejandro (Anthony J. Garcia) who wants to make a documentary about him.  Michael is hesitant because the press has not treated him kindly.  The reporters questions reminds him of his childhood struggles and dealings with his father.

After turning solo, he connects with Quincy Jones (Josh A. Dawson) who transforms him into the superstar that his is today.

The music was directed by Nathanael Wilkerson.  Jackson sang and danced to his most famous hits such as:  “ABC,” “Billie Jean,” “Man in the Mirror,” “Thriller,” “Black or White” and “Bad,” just to name a few.  Actually, there were 40 songs in all.

The choreography was the best I’ve ever seen.  Michael was a perfectionist and it shows.  The audience was connected to his attention to detail of his performance.  The stage decorations and set changes were out of this world.

The King of Pop lives on in “MJ: The Musical.”  As a fan of Michael Jackson, I was pleasantly surprised how wonderful the musical is.    He is the legend and the myth.  I consider this a MUST-SEE musical; you won’t be disappointed.
