“Mean Girls” is a rock musical written by Tina Fey that is now playing at the Fisher Theatre from November 19-24. Tina Fey also appeared in the movie version of the same name back in 2004. However, I did not see it. So I’m only going by the musical version. Jeff Richmond, Fey’s husband wrote the music and Nell Benjamin wrote the lyrics.
‘Mean Girls’ the musical is about a girl Cady Heron (Natalie Shaw) who is from Kenya Africa and moves to Illinois to attend a public high school called North Shore High School. There she gets a quick lesson on the cruel laws of popularity. There are social cliques everywhere.
Regina George (Maya Petropoulos) is the Queen Bee of one of the elite cliques called the Plastics. Cady gets into her good graces until she is smitten with Regina’s ex-boyfriend. Regina begins to see Cady as a threat to her popularity. Then things turn ugly. Regina is mean and the girls turn vicious.
The lesson to be learned here is “Calling somebody else fat won’t make you any skinnier. Calling someone stupid doesn’t make you any smarter.” The point is don’t be mean and judgmental. Perhaps this rings a bell when you were in high school?
There was a 20-minute intermission between the two Acts. Also there was fog, haze and strobe lights throughout the performance.
I thought the musical was somewhat hard to understand. There was lots and lots of musical numbers and lots and lots of dancing which I thought was excessive. I give it three stars out of five.
