“But it’s all right now, in fact it’s a gas

But it’s all right, I’m jumpin’ jack flash
It’s a gas, gas, gas (oh)“
Detroit — I took the People Mover to the first day of the Detroit Auto Show at Cobo Hall, I mean, Huntington Hall, ooooops, Huntington Place this past Friday and witnessed the awarding of the 2025 North American Car of the Year (Honda Civic Hybrid), Best Truck (Ford Ranger), and Best SUV (Volkswagen ID. Buzz). They all look pretty cool. The beautiful Toyota Camry was a contender for Best Car; but this time, Honda won by a hare. It kinda bugs me as I love my Camry; but I do actually love the idea of the hybrid. I am all for alternative power; but, let’s face it, having to plug in ain’t no gas. Not at all.
I then moseyed over to the Ford Bronco Ride Experience. Sara was my driver. I was co-pilot; well, I sat in the passenger seat, anyway. It was fun going a full 45 degrees in that Beast. One Bronco has a little drawing of Big Foot on it. I want one! Waaaaa!
In addition, there are three other ride-and-drive tracks on the show floor. Camp Jeep includes Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep and Ram. The Detroit Grand Prix course features Buick, Ford, Honda, Mazda and VW. Finally, the Powering Michigan track has BMW, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC and Rivian.
I even saw the VW Bug from one of the Austin Powers’ movies. What a thrill! Outside the ice floes on the Detroit River (really a strait) were relaxing to take in. It felt right for the auto show to be back in its chilly, but rightful time and place.
On my way back to my Camry on the People Mover, we rode past the Spirit of Detroit, complete with a Lions jersey on. What a wonderful time to be from and/or in Detroit. The Motor City knows how to bring it. You just have to show up.
