Review: ‘Golden Girls’ is a hit at the Fisher Theatre

Detroit“Golden Girls: The Laugh Continues” stopped in Detroit at the Fisher Theatre from January 16-19, 2025.  Written by Robert Leleux and directed by Eric Swanson:  Rose, Blanche, Dorothy and Sophia are in their Miami home causing mischief by the minute.

As we were waiting to begin, there was a playlist of 80’s songs such as “9 to 5”, “Grease”, and songs from ABBA.  The curtain opened with the set of the Miami house living room and kitchen, just as it was on television.

The elderly Sophia (Christopher Kamm) was wearing an ankle monitor because she was caught selling LSD to the residents of Shady Pines.  She was known as “El Chapo of Shady Pines.”  The sultry Blanche (Vince Kelley) and ditzy Rose (Adam Graber) were owners of a dating app for Seniors called CreakN.  Yes, Rose used her St. Olaf meaningless jargon, and Blanche is still totally man crazy.

Dorothy (Ryan Bernier) hooks up with a man on the CreakN site, not knowing he is the District Attorney on Sophia’s court case.

The cast’s chemistry was fantastic as the story unfolded.  The play was surprising to me in many ways, especially not knowing what it was about beforehand.  Number one, I didn’t expect it to be raunchy as it was.  Number two, I didn’t expect it to be a drag show.  However, the theatrical drag play was as close to the real thing as it was on tv.  The four men sounded just like the real characters and looked like the real characters.  This laugh out loud play is not what you would expect but shockingly good.

“The Golden Girls: The Laugh Continues” is showing at the Fisher Theatre, in Detroit, located at 3011 W. Grand Blvd., and showtimes are as follows:

  • Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening at 7:30 pm
  • Saturday 2 pm
  • Sunday 1 pm

Ticket prices start at $55 (including parking and facility fee) and may be purchased at BroadwayinDetroit.com or at the Fisher Theatre Box Office.

  1. The play was surprisingly good however accoustics were terrible. We could not catch several of the lines.
