Students From The Great Lakes Region Head To Make The Future Festival This Week To See Innovation In Action

DETROIT  — Approximately 12,000 students from more than 80 schools in the greater Detroit area will head to Detroit’s Cobo Center later this week to explore the future of energy during a STEM-focused school tour to Make the Future Detroit, featuring Shell Eco-marathon Americas. The festival, which is free of charge and will take place April 27 – 30, 2017, will celebrate bright energy ideas that will inspire current and future energy solutions, offering free virtual reality experiences and hands-on science experiments for an expected crowd of more than 20,000 visitors from the Great Lakes Region, including fifth through 10th grade students from the Detroit Public Schools Community District.

“We are proud to work with the Detroit Public Schools Community District to put on this program for the thousands of bright young students in the area,” said Pamela Rosen, general manager for Shell Eco-marathon Americas. “To meet tomorrow’s global energy challenges, we will need everyone’s contributions, particularly young entrepreneurs, and inventors whose ideas will be key to discovering more, cleaner energy solutions, and this field trip program is a step forward towards inspiring students to get involved early on in their educational career.”

“We are excited to partner with Shell again this year,” said Alycia Meriweather, interim superintendent, Detroit Public Schools Community District. “The Eco-marathon provides a phenomenal real-world learning experience that allows our students to explore innovation in the fields of science and engineering, and sparks interest for future careers. A special thanks to Shell for their commitment to DPSCD.”

There is a packed schedule for Make the Future this year. During the festival, students and visitors from the Great Lakes Region will participate in activities that explore how people use and create energy in everyday life. They will listen to live music, watch weird science shows, meet celebrity guests, inspiring entrepreneurs, and view the Shell Eco-marathon Americas mileage competition.

Shell Eco-marathon Americas is a global ultra-mileage competition that will bring together more than 1,200 students from across the Americas – including Canada, Mexico, Brazil and the United States – to see which team can go the furthest distance on the least amount of fuel. The students competing in Shell Eco-marathon Americas work to design, build and drive the world’s most energy efficient vehicle.
