DETROIT — Lexus took the wraps off its all-new 2018 Lexus LS 500 flagship sedan on Saturday evening inside the brand new Lexus Velodrome in Detroit. The Velodrome is a new $4 million indoor biking, running and walking complex located at 601 Mack Avenue.
“We have a very special global reveal on Monday morning,” said Jeff Bracken, group vice president and general manager of Lexus. “It’s called the Lexus LF-1 Limitless concept utility. It’s the first of 17 product stories that we’ll have throughout this calendar year. It’s a very exciting time for us. The LC 500 won an EyesOn Design award back in 2016. Last year, the LS 500 won an interior design award. Who knows about the LF-1.”
Meanwhile, the 2018 Lexus LS 500 is equipped with the automaker’s first-ever twin-turbocharged engine producing 416 horsepower. It can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds. Fuel economy is expected to be estimated at 28 mpg on the highway.
Three trim levels are available: A standard LS 500, the LS 500 F Sport edition and LS 500h hybrid edition.
The hybrid model comes with a gasoline engine paired with two powerful electric motors and a self-charging lightweight lithium-ion battery. The LS 500h will produce 354 horsepower, and will achieve an estimated 33 mpg on the highway.
Additional features include a 24-inch color heads-up display, a 12.3-inch Navigation display, 28-way adjustable front seats with a massage setting and a 3D surround sound system. There’s even a touchscreen control panel in the vehicle’s second row.
“Aren’t these cars awesome? That’s my favorite right over there,” said Dale Hughes, executive director of the Detroit Fitness Foundation, which runs the Lexus Velodrome. “We partnered with the City of Detroit Parks and Recreation Department to build and operate this multi-sport complex. We did it without any taxpayer money. Our mission is simple: to provide fitness and sporting opportunities for area residents with a focus on youth and seniors.”
Look for the 2018 LS 500 flagship sedan to arrive in U.S. dealerships this spring.
