The Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear will return home to the Streets of Downtown Detroit, June 2-4, 2023. The event will feature the cars of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES racing in the Chevrolet INDYCAR Grand Prix, the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, INDY NXT by Firestone and the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli. The event is collectively referred to as the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear.

RACE HISTORY:
The first Detroit Grand Prix was in 1982 and it started as a Formula One race through the streets of downtown Detroit before becoming a CART-sanctioned race in 1989. The race moved to Belle Isle in 1992 continuing under the CART/Champ Car banner until 2001. After the success of the Super Bowl in Detroit in 2006, Roger Penske and the Downtown Detroit Partnership (DDP) teamed up to bring an annual national sporting event to the city of Detroit and spearheaded the return of the Grand Prix in 2007 on Belle Isle. After challenging economic times delayed the event after the 2008 season, the Grand Prix returned in 2012 with Chevrolet as the title sponsor of the event and the current promotional group as a subsidiary of the DDP. The 2019 event marked the 30th Grand Prix in Detroit’s history. The event was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but returned in 2021 with limited attendance due to health and safety protocols in place for the event. The 2022 event marked the final Grand Prix on Belle Isle as the Grand Prix returns to its roots on the Downtown Detroit streets in 2023 and beyond.
WINNERS AT THE DETROIT GRAND PRIX:
The 2022 Chevrolet INDYCAR Grand Prix featured a third Detroit victory for Team Penske racer Will Power. It represented his only race victory in a season that saw Power claim his second career NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship.
In the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the No. 01 Cadillac for Chip Ganassi Racing took home its second consecutive Prototype class win in the Chevrolet Sports Car Classic with drivers Renger van der Zande and Sebastien Bourdais. In the GTD class, the No. 17 Vasser Sullivan team scored its first win of the season and the first career IMSA victory for drivers Kyle Kirkwood and Ben Barnicoat.
Indy Lights returned to Belle Isle for a doubleheader weekend in the Motor City. HMD Motorsports driver Linus Lundqvist swept the weekend, leading all 55 laps in the two races and left the Motor City with the Indy Lights championship lead on his way to the 2023 title.

Fan activities for the 2023 Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear will be featured in Hart Plaza and Spirit Plaza, while Autotrader Winner’s Circle will be located at the Riverwalk on the Detroit Riverfront.
ENTERTAINMENT:
The Grand Prix Entertainment Stage will be located in Hart Plaza and it will feature music Friday-Sunday. Fans can watch performances on the stage free of charge throughout the weekend. Headline acts include A-Track at 6pm ET and Big Boi at 7:30pm ET on Friday, June 2 with Z-Trip at 5:30pm ET and Steve Aoki at 7pm ET on Saturday, June 3.

COMMUNITY IMPACT:
The Grand Prix has generated over $45 million in total spending annually for the Metro Detroit region. An independent study concluded the Grand Prix created an estimated $58 million in total spending for the region in 2017. Over 95,000 people attended the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear events in 2007, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022.
SUSTAINABILITY:
The 2023 Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear will be the most sustainable event in the history of the Grand Prix in the Motor City. Striving to be the only event in Michigan to be certified by the Council for Responsible Sport in 2023, the Grand Prix will become first motorsports event in history to offset all race attendee travel emissions by reinvesting in Michigan-based forest preservation and restoration. The event will also implement an enhanced and more comprehensive recycling and waste diversion program, working with its partners at Priority Waste. Combined with the efforts from the racing series competing in Detroit, including the cars from the NTT INDYCAR SERIES running on 100% renewable fuel and featuring a new eco-friendly Firestone Firehawk tire compound from the guayule desert shrub, the Grand Prix will become one of the most environmentally-conscious events in Michigan.

BACK TO THE STREETS IN 2023:
In 2023, the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear will return to its original home, on the streets of Downtown Detroit. With a 1.7-mile street circuit incorporating Jefferson Avenue and Atwater Street, along Detroit’s Riverfront, the Grand Prix will bring a festival-like atmosphere to the city. The Downtown Grand Prix will embrace the local community with more than half of the event’s footprint open and accessible to everyone for free, including key fan activation areas in Hart Plaza, Spirit Plaza and Riverfront Plaza.
