DETROIT
-- Grand Trunk Pub is located at 612 Woodward Ave. in downtown
Detroit. The structure dates back to 1879 when it was originally
the Taub Bros. & Co. Jewelry store. In 1910 the Grand Trunk
Railroad purchased the building and in 1911, it was renovated as
a ticketing office. Grand Trunk removed the second floor and added
the arched ceilings reminiscent of railroad stations. It turned
into a bar in 1935 and remained a pub ever since. Grand Trunk is
a truly unique place and is officially a Michigan Historical landmark.
We stopped
in Grand Trunk Pub for a bite to eat today. On the menu there are
appetizers and snacks from mozzarella sticks to fresh guacamole
and chips. The prices range from $3 to $7.75.
There are
soups, salads, burgers and sandwiches. Also there are main dishes,
sides and desserts. They offer quite a selection of food depending
on your tastebuds.
We had the
Wee Burger which is a classic hamburger with American cheese, lettuce,
tomato, red onion and pickles which is served with potato chips.
I thoroughly enjoyed the burger as it was cooked to perfection.
The burgers range from $6 to $9. The $9 Burger was the Foran burger.
It is a 1/2 pound burger with corned beef, 1000 Russian dressing,
swiss cheese and "stout" kraut.
The main
dishes include Shepherd's Pie, fish and chips, meatloaf, and a quiche
plate, among others.
There are
over 170 bottled craft beers; some are made in Michigan.
I loved
the atmosphere, it was very cozy and it did remind me of a railroad
ticket office. I would recommend this pub to everyone. The nostalgia
and atmosphere is something you'll never forget.
