COSTA MESA, Calif. -- The 2014 Orange County (OC) Fair is under way right now at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, Calif. It features 23 days of food, rides, exhibits, animals, music, action sports and fun. “Summer Starts Here” is this year’s fair theme. The Toyota Summer Concert Series at the Pacific Amphitheatre has featured national acts such as Karmin, Ziggy Marley, LeAnn Rimes, Lifehouse, Little Big Town, 311, Billy Currington and Lynyrd Skynyrd. The OC Fair holds the title of being the ninth-largest fair in America.

Most people come to the fair for one thing and one thing only – the food. New additions include Bacon-wrapped Jack Daniel’s churros, deep fried bacon-wrapped turkey legs, Texas donuts, deep fried Dorito’s and deep fried chicken skins.

First, I met up with Kirstyn from Redlands who was enjoying her bacon-wrapped turkey leg.

“I think the fair is really fun,” Kirstyn said. “I like the rides. I think it’s called OMG. The bacon-wrapped turkey leg is really, really good. This is my first time going here.”

Then, I spoke with Aiden and Mathew from Costa Mesa who were waiting in line for the La Grande Wheel.

“I liked the alien abduction ride the best,” said Aiden Smith. “It’s my first time going on the ferris wheel. I’m eating at home, but the cotton candy is delicious.

His brother, Mathew Debie, added: “The log ride was my favorite. It’s my second time going on the ferris wheel. The ferris wheel, I bet, is going to be very good. I ate a giant corn dog. No, I haven’t had anything fried.”

Later, I stopped to talk with Nayelli Mendoza from Riverside about her larger-than-life stuffed animal she won.

“It’s pretty fun, but I think they have too much spiny rides,” Mendoza explained. “Too much rides that spin around because you get all nauseous. This is my first time coming. I think winning a bear is my favorite part. I had to shoot a basketball into a basket.”

Natalie and Zak were checking out the animals so I stopped to chat with them.

“I’ve been here six or seven times,” said Natalie Braun of San Juan Capistrano. “The food and the animals are my favorite part of the fair. The Krispy Kream sloppy joe was my favorite last year or the deep-fried Oreo’s. I love the animals. They’re like my little friends.

Her boyfriend, Zak Cullum of Costa Mesa, added: “It’s my third time this year and I’ve been coming since I’m a kid. The food, mainly the food are my favorites. The bratwurst is what brings me to the fair. I have fun with the animals.”

Finally, I spoke with Little Mikey from Huntington Beach, who just got off the Sky Ride.

“The fair is awesome,” Mike Trujillo said. “The alien abduction is my favorite ride. A girl gave me her Despicable Me stuffed animal and I gave her my hammer. You had to make a bell ring by swinging a hammer.”

The OC Fair was lots of fun for all. Hurry on down before it all wraps up on Sunday, Aug. 10.
