LOS
ANGELES -- The 2014 Honda Accord was named the winner of
the 2014 Green Car of the Year Award by the Green Car Journal.
The announcement was made by Ron Cogan, the magazine's editor
and publisher, on the second press day of the 2013 Los Angeles Auto
Show. The 2014 Accord also comes in a hybrid model achieving 50
mpg highway and a plug-in model reaching 115 MPGe, the highest of
any mid-size hybrid sedan in the country. It surpassed the other
four finalists for the award: the Audi A6 TDI, BMW 328d, Mazda3
and the Toyota Corolla. All models must be on sale by Jan. 1 to
be eligible for the award.
"This
year's Green Car winner offers something for everyone," Cogan
said. "It's accommodating, featuring a comfort and functionality
expected of a mainstream sedan incorporating the latest in onboard
electronics and safety systems while delivering a satisfying driving
experience. Certainly, it excels. With a virtual approach to environmental
leadership offering very efficient combustion powerplants, a hybrid
option and a plug-in option. I'm proud to say that Green Car
Journal's 2014 Green Car of the Year is Honda's exceptional
and efficient and multi-tasking 2014 Accord."
2014 Green
Car of the Year jurors included Jean-Michel Cousteau, president
of Ocean Futures Society; Kateri Callahan, president of the Alliance
to Save Energy; Matt Petersen, board member of Global Green USA;
Frances Beinecke, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council;
Dr. Alan Lloyd, president of the International Council on Clean
Transportation, Tonight Show host Jay Leno and Green
Car Journal editors.
"Thanks
to the Green Car Journal, not only honoring the Accord, but for
shining the spotlight on the environment and bringing attention
to our shared vision of the future of ultra-low carbon emissions,"
said Mike Accavitti, senior vice president of automotive operations
for American Honda Motor Co. "This new Accord family offers
something for everyone. Anyone looking for a Green car: four-cylinder
fuel efficiency, six-cylinder fuel efficiency and power, a plug-in
hybrid that gets 115 MPGe and we have the new 50 mpg city Honda
Accord. We're very excited about this line-up and we're very excited
to be honored."
Previous
Green Car of the Year winners include the Ford Fusion (2013), Honda
Civic Natural Gas (2012), Chevrolet Volt (2011), Audi A3 TDI (2010),
Volkswagen Jetta TDI (2009), Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid (2008), Toyota
Camry Hybrid (2007) and the Mercury Martiner Hybrid (2006).
"When
you consider the Honda Accord's cost and mileage it delivers with
standard and hybrid power, you're not only economically ahead of
the game but also imoving environmental impact by using less petroleum
and cutting CO2 emissions," said Jean-Michel Cousteau, president
of Ocean Futures Society and a Green Car of the Year juror.
I wasn't
too surprised that the Honda Accord won. However, I am wondering
why the Fiat 500e, Chevrolet Spark EV and BMW i3 and i8 were not
considered. Those electric vehicles will all be in dealer showrooms
by Jan. 1, but none of them were considered as a finalist. Two of
this year's finalists were diesels and the other three were regular
gasoline-powered vehicles.
