INDIO,
Calif. -- Is it just a rumor? It has been
spreading like wildfire... word that Goldenvoice is moving the
Coachella Music and Arts Festival out of Indio. For
now, the answer is, yes it is only a rumor. There
was a good reason why this story circulated so quickly.
Indio City Councilman Sam Torres postponed his proposed ticket
tax, which would have affected the Stagecoach and Coachella Music
Festivals. Both festivals are promoted by Goldenvoice and
currently held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California.
Torres
said that he’s now looking to repair the city’s relationship
with Goldenvoice, and is looking forward to the future. Music
folks were all abuzz on the internet saying the festival was moving
out of Indio after next year because of the proposed ticket tax.
It now appears the whole thing is up in the air. No official word
has been reported yet. Local businesses who heard the
rumor say they're hoping the festival stays right where it is.
This has always been phenomenal for the businesses of our community-
the restaurants, the stores, the gas stations, taco stands, hot
dog stands, and all the other kinds of businesses- it’s
been wonderful,” says Ciro’s Italian Restaurant Owner
Ron Hare.
Goldenvoice
president Paul Tollett had said earlier this year that the company
was looking to purchase land in the area for a new venue. Per
a statement from Tollett, this is all “in limbo” now.
Held at
the Polo Grounds for 15 years, this music festival brings in revenue
of over a million dollars annually. Stay tuned though.
I see more back-peddling changes coming withal this latest saber-rattling.
The 2013 event is scheduled for April 12-14 and April 19-21.
