WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- Two filmmakers and an actor/comedian, all originally from metro Detroit, came together to open Coney Dog LA. Mike Binder owns the eatery while Sam Raimi and Tim Allen both invested in the Detroit-style Coney Island restaurant. It is the first of its kind in the Los Angeles area. Coney Dog LA serves Detroit favorites such as Faygo Pop, Vernors Ginger Ale, Stroh's Beer and Sander's Ice Cream Sundaes. It is located across the street from Whiskey A Go Go at the intersection of Sunset Blvd. and Clark St.

Binder was born in Detroit and was raised in Birmingham, Mich. He is best known for writing and directing the films Reign Over Me, Mad About Town and The Upside of Anger. Raimi was born in Royal Oak, Mich. and also grew up in Birmingham, Mich. He is best known for directing three Spider-Man films in 2002, 2004 and 2007. Allen was born in Denver and was also raised in Birmingham, Mich. He is best known as the lead actor in the ABC series, Home Improvement.

"We have a variety of different things from the menus at the Coney Islands back home," said waitress Kim Crorey, who also grew up in metro Detroit. "Everything here is authentically Detroit-style. We can't even get all of that back home. The prices here are not bad at all. Just being a newbie to LA, I've been exposed to some high prices. Everything here is very, very reasonable. It's a little bit higher than the prices back home due to the location and that we import stuff right from Detroit. My heart and soul is into this restaurant, 100 percent. I was so excited from day one."

The restaurant also features flat-screen TVs so guests can watch Detroit area sports while they are dining. Customers can expect to see the Tigers, Lions, Pistons and even the Red Wings at the restaurant. When the Michigan Wolverines or the Michigan State Spartans are playing, one can watch those games there as well.

"It is my first time here, it's been wonderful and we ate a feast," said Doreen Castaneda from San Jose, Calif. "First, we started out with the regular coney dog. Then, we went onto the coney combo. The chili on it was delicious. They put just the right amount of onions. The hot dog was very juicy. The buns were nice and fresh. We had sweet potato fries and it just hit it off perfect. I was surprised, I thought they were going to be more expensive. They were very reasonable. I think the location is wonderful because it's around the hustle and bustle. In fact, I don't eat hot dogs. This is one place where I was looking forward to having one."

In addition to coney dogs, they also serve Michigan burgers, sweet potato fries and a selection of salads. A coney dog is basically a hot dog with chili, yellow mustard and onions. A loose burger is ground angus chuck served in a hot dog bun with chili, yellow mustard and onions. The coney combo is a combination of both.

"We saw it advertised and I've been craving coney dogs," said Andrea Short from Torrance, Calif. "You can't get good, original coneys in California. It was really good, just what I was looking for. I know they come from back east and people from California don't know what they're missing. It's almost addictive. It's the combination of that meat, I don't know what's in it, and the dog. That makes it different. It's a good price for a good product. If you don't know Sunset Blvd., it's a little hard to get to. The biggest thing is you have parking. That did it. It was really good. I was pleasantly surprised."

Coney Dog LA is open from 11 a.m. to midnight from Sunday through Wednesday and from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. from Thursday through Saturday. It offers one-hour of free parking on the roof. To enter the parking lot, drive north on Clark Street, then make a right and go up the ramp to the second level.
