HOLLYWOOD, Calif.
-- The most famous movie palace in the world, Grauman’s
Chinese Theatre (www.chinesetheatres.com),
is turning 85 years-old.
Turning back the clock, the legendary theatre is offering a 25 cent
admission Mondays only, (Oct. 8 is “Abbott & Costello
Meet Frankenstein” followed by “Psycho” on Oct.
22), and it will feature a classic film that has premiered at Graumans’
Chinese over the past eight decades.
The newly created “Grauman’s
Gallery,” open free to the public, is set to feature a show
of newly-discovered one of a kind photos of historic handprint-footprint
ceremonies recently unearthed in the basement by the theatre’s
new owners and featuring everyone from Ronald Reagan to Frank Sinatra,
Jean Harlow, Julie Andrews and Clark Gable.
Today, The Grauman’s
Chinese Theatre forecourt is among the world’s most photographed
tourist sites, annually attracting as many visitors as the Sistine
Chapel at The Vatican.
The Chinese Theatre handprints-footprints
ceremony is rich in tradition and provides the over four million
people a year who visit the site an opportunity to experience the
lore of Hollywood up close, for here lay the handprints and footprints
of Hollywood’s most notable talents.
Unlike any other award
in Hollywood, be it an Oscar® or a sidewalk ceremony, The Chinese
Theatre handprints-footprints tribute is the most selective of all,
since over the course of nine decades, only 250-Plus such honors
have been presented in some 208 official ceremonies.
Movie exhibitor Sid Grauman,
who was one of Hollywood’s best known and most creative showmen,
opened The Chinese in 1927 and launched the handprint-footprint
ceremony to honor, in a meaningful and unique gesture, selected
and worthy stars at his red carpet premieres and first run films.
Among the first handprints and footprints were those of Mary Pickford
and Douglas Fairbanks.
In any given year, The
Chinese Theatre, and its adjacent Chinese 6 Theatres complex, hosts
over 40 red carpet film premieres and since it opened it has hosted
three Academy Award® ceremonies and numerous world premieres,
including those for internationally-acclaimed film franchises, such
as “Star Wars” and “Harry Potter.”
More recent handprint-footprint
celebrants have included The "Twilight" stars, Mickey
O’Rourke, Cher, Robert Duvall, Peter O’Toole, Helen
Mirren and Michael Jackson.
