The
intersection of State Street and E. William Street is a popular
hangout for students. There are lots of shops and restaurants in
this area of campus.

Angell
Hall houses classrooms and offices for professors. The Angell Hall
Observatory is an astronomical observatory owned and operated by
University of Michigan. It now has a computer-controlled Cassegrain
telescope in its single dome, but in the past has housed a large,
clock-driven refracting telescope and a reflecting telescope in
side-by-side domes.

The
University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts,
also known as the College of LS&A is the liberal arts and sciences
unit of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Established in
1841 with seven students and two teachers, the college is currently
the largest unit at U-M in terms of the number of students enrolled.

The
Michigan Union is a student union at the University of Michigan.
It is located at the intersection of South State Street and South
University Avenue in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
The Michigan Union houses restaurants, student organization office
space, conference rooms, study areas, and other student resources.
The Union is also the location of local elections.

On
October 14, 1960 at 2 in the morning, presidential candidate John
F. Kennedy announced his Peace Corps proposal in a speech delivered
on the steps of the Michigan Union. A plaque at the steps now commemorates
the event. The Michigan Union was also selected as the site of Lyndon
B. Johnson's speech outlining his Great Society program.

The
original Michigan Union was designed by architects and University
of Michigan alumni, Irving K. Pond and Allen B. Pond, who also planned
the Michigan League building. It was constructed in 1917 on the
site of the former Thomas Cooley House. During construction the
building was used as a barracks for the Student Army Training Corps.
The building was completely renovated in 1994.

of Michigan
The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (U of
M, U-M, UM or simply Michigan) is a coeducational public research
university in the state of Michigan. The university was founded
in 1817 in Detroit, about 20 years before the territory of
Michigan officially became a state, and moved to Ann Arbor
in 1837. Today, it is the state's oldest university and the
flagship campus; there are two satellite campuses —
the University of Michigan-Flint and the University of Michigan-Dearborn.
The university is internationally renowned for its academics.
In its last published survey in 1995, the National Research
Council ranked UM third in the United States in a study that
aggregated evaluations of 41 graduate disciplines and is considered
as one of the original eight Public Ivys.
