BELLEVILLE,
Mich. -- Lots
of fun and excitement are underway at the 2014 Belleville Strawberry
Festival, which is taking place this weekend. A large portion
of the festival will be held along Main Street again this year.
Many of the festival favorites are scheduled to return this year
including the parade, juried art booths and the Cinnamon Father's
Day Car Show. New additions include flyboarding at Horizon park,
a book signing with Justin Verlander's parents, earlier hours
in the downtown area and at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Trinity
Episcopal Church will be offering gluten-free strawberry shortcake
and pies once again.
The festival
was created in 1976 by a local farmer who wanted to promote strawberries.
Each year, an estimated 200,000 visitors attend this festival.
It also raises money for local community organizations.
Trinity
Episcopal Church will also have a Bakery tent set up where you
can purchase strawberry pies and cheesecakes, strawberry bread
and muffins, and strawberry jam (including no-sugar added if you
are diabetic). And for those who are Celiac/gluten-sensitive,
we offer the bread and muffins as a gluten-free option. Check
out the variety of crafters set up in the church hall and on the
lawn to see what they have to sell. Always a good time to get
gifts for that special someone. Many of our crafters return each
year, so stop on by to see what they have.
Justin
Verlander's parents, Richard and Kathy Verlander, will be signing
copies of their book "Rocks Across the Pond." His parents
will also have Justin's All Star ring for people to see and try
on. The book is a a perspective on the joys and pitfalls of raising
a young, up-and-coming star athlete. Richard and Kathy will be
at the Strawberry Festival all weekend long for the signing, which
will be located at one of the tents on Main Street. For more information
about "Rocks Across the Pond," visit www.verlandercook.com.
Extreme
Aqua Sports presents flyboarding at Horizon Park. Flyboarding
is a new extreme sport. Come watch the flyboarders take flight
in the air via a 60-foot hose, which feeds water onto the board.
Flyboarders can go as high as forty feet in the air.
