OAK, Mich. -- The
6th Annual Bras for a Cause was held at the Royal Oak Music Theatre
on Saturday. Doors opened at 6 p.m. and the program featured Amy
Lange from Fox 2 News as emcee. More than $100,000 was collected
in donations this year with $13,000 raised by the art bra models
and the remainder coming from local businesses and anonymous donors.
Laura
Varon Brown, Executive Director of Gilda's Club Metro Detroit,
spoke and started with a quote from Gilda Radner, "No one
should face cancer alone." Kevin Watson was married to Shannon
Watson, the former committee chair. "He is one of the most
extraordinary human beings I've ever known," says Brown.
Lisa Aline Hanes, a cancer survivor, says its been five years
since she's been diagnosed. "Being a part of Bras for a Cause
has given myself and many others the opportunity to make sure
that our spirit, creativity and uniqueness never dies. You see,
being diagnosed with breast cancer takes away part of who you
are....but it's only temporary. Shannon was one of the reasons
I came to Gilda's after I was diagnosed. I had to see what this
place was all about. Even though I never got the chance to meet
Shannon, she still impacted me and the way I chose to fight against
breast cancer. Thank you, Shannon, for showing us all that your
spirit will never die," says Hanes.
There
were musical performances by Robin Horlock and GnT Acoustics.
The evening also featured salsa dancing by Susan Trump Ayotte
and Barry Douglas. Dave Santia did his speed painting and created
three pictures, which he donated to the live auction. There were
raffle drawings, a silent auction along with the live auction.
The
finale was the Survivors Fashion Show in which women showed off
themed bra designs.
Gilda's
Club Metro Detroit is an affiliate of the Cancer Support Community,
CSC and Gilda's Clubs are one of the largest providers of free
psychosocial support throughout North America. The local program
is supported by the generosity of individuals, community organizations,
foundations, businesses and special events--like the amazing Bras
