Many stores say they have the lowest everyday prices. Which ones really do? The AmericaJR.com Web Team went to find out. We checked prices on the same eight breakfast foods at 10 different retailers to find out. Here are the results. Do you know where to find the lowest-priced breakfast foods for your family? We're talking about items such as coffee, oatmeal, cereal and pop-tarts. You may think the cheapest prices will be at the grocery store. Our exclusive investigation will be an eye opener. We visited the following stores: Hillers, Busch's, Kroger, Meijer, CVS, RiteAid, Walgreen's, Target, Kmart and Wal-Mart from August 3-7, 2013. All of the prices that we compared were regular prices. We did not take sale prices or clearance prices into consideration because those change each week. If a store didn't have the product we were comparing, there will be a non-applicable (N/A) in that column. It could also indicate the store didn't have the size we were looking for. The store may have a smaller or larger sized item, but the price will be significantly different than the products we compared. Here are the results to our exclusive investigation, only on AmericaJR.com:
A lot has changed in the last year when we last did this investigation at around the same time. Many of the products that we checked the prices on are now available in smaller packages. However, some of the breakfast items are now in larger quantities. Most of the prices have gone up, while others have gone down. The price of Folgers Classic Roast coffee has down by a few dollars at most stores. Meijer and Walmart are once again tied for the lowest price at $8.28 per 33.9-oz container. Both stores dropped their prices by $1.20 from last year. Kroger is also priced at $8.28, but it only sells a smaller 27.8-oz container. Walgreen's lowered its price by four dollars on the Folgers coffee, but it is still priced at $11.49. Target has lowered its price by $1.60 and is inching closer to meeting Meijer and Walmart's prices. Hillers was the only store that kept its price the same as last year, $11.99 per container. The 14-oz., eight pack of Frosted Strawberry Pop Tarts are once again the cheapest at Walmart, which is selling it for $1.98, a price drop of 14 cents from last year, when it had the lowest price at $1.98 per box. Virtually every store we checked kept the price the same from 2012. Kroger did, however, lower its price by 20 cents from $2.19 last year to $1.99 this year. Walmart beat them by one penny to have the lowest price on the Pop Tarts. The Wheaties cereal box remains at 15.6 oz. Three stores are once again tied for the cheapest price of $3.99: Hiller's, Kroger and Meijer. All three stores kept their prices the same along with Busch's, which sells Wheaties for $4.19. This is the first time that Kmart is selling the 15.6-oz. cereal box since 2010. It is priced at $4.79 there. The Cheerios cereal box remains at 14 oz. Once again, Target and Walmart are tied for the cheapest price this year at $2.84 per box. No change there. Two of the stores--CVS and Meijer--raised their price on the cereal box by 20 cents. Walgreen's only sellls the 8.9-oz. box of Cheerios and that is $4.49. Other than that, all of the stores kept their prices the same over the past year. The 25.5-oz. Raisin Bran box of cereal was downsized to a 23.5-oz. box for 2013. Two less ounches of cereal! Target has the lowest price this year at $3.50 per 23.5-oz. box. In terms of quantity, Walmart would actually be cheaper because it sells a 30-oz. box for $3.68. Busch's offers a 24.8-oz. box of Raisin Bran for $5.49. Two stores that didn't offer Raisin Bran last year--Kmart and RiteAid--are now selling it for $4.19 and $4.99, respectively. Walmart continues to have the lowest price on the 17-oz. box of Frosted Flakes, at $2.98 per box, the same as last year's low price. Only three other stores are offering the 17-oz. box: Kmart at $4.99 and Target at $3.04 and CVS at $4.99. Hiller's, Kroger, Busch's and Meijer only sell the 15-oz. box of Frosted Flakes. Meijer is cheapest among those stoer stores at $3.29 per box. RiteAid and Walgreen's only offer a 10.5-oz. box and RiteAid is the lower of the two at $4.99 per box. Target now has the cheapest price on the 10-pack flavor variety of Quaker Oatmeal at $2.89 per box. They lowered their price by 11 cents to beat Walmart, which is selling it for $3 per box. Kroger had the lowest price last year, but raised their price by 15 cents this year. Walgreen's dropped their price by 30 cents to $4.99 while Meijer dropped its price by 11 cents to $3.14 per box. Walmart and Meijer are once again tied for the lowest price on the Quaker Oaks 18-oz. original round container at $2.42 each. Walmart has been the low price leader on the Quaker Oats container for the past six years. Several stores raised their prices on the original round container within the past year. CVS raised its price by 40 cents from $3.29 per container to $3.69 per container this year. Meanwhile, Busch's increased its price by 10 cents and Target raised its price by six cents in 2013. Hopefully, this report will influence your shopping decisions. If you are on a budget, now you will know where to get the best deals on breakfast foods for your family. Even if you aren't on a budget, this report should make you think twice about where to get the best value for your money. This proves that the grocery store doesn't always have the cheapest price on groceries. To summarize: Walmart has the lowest price on five items while Meijer and Target have the cheapest price on three items. Hillers and Kroger both have the lowest price on one item.
