LOS
ANGELES -- Apple CarPlay allows drivers
to have most of their apps from the iPhone appear on the 8-inch
touchscreen in the center console. Hyundai is the first mainstream
brand to integrate this groundbreaking technology into their highest
volume vehicle, the Sonata. It will allow consumers to make calls,
use maps, listen to music and access messages -- all by using
their voice instead of their fingers.
The
idea is to keep their eyes on the road, but continue to use the
technology. Hyundai says there will be no extra charges as long
as you have an iPhone 5 or better and a Sonata with navigation.
Drivers
just need to plug their USB cord into the phone and the car and
then CarPlay will launch. Available apps include phone, music,
maps, messages, now playing, Hyundai, podcasts and others. To
launch Siri, just press the voice recognition button on the left
side of the steering wheel.
"We
have a great way to use your phone in the car," said Emily
from Apple Inc. "It's safer and more fun. You can see that
it looks a lot like your iPhone. We have all of the features on
your phone that make sense to use in the car. I can do all of
this from the steering wheel without letting go. You see your
own user interface and you have access to Siri.
One
of the features I particularly enjoyed is the iHeartRadio app.
Drivers can listen to any radio station anywhere in the country.
For example, you can listen to a Detroit radio station in Los
Angeles and vice versa.
"We
want to keep the experience safe," said Miles Johnson, product
public relations manager at Hyundai Motor America. "We've
seen a lot of people over the years taking their phones up and
using it or sending mesages. You need the apps to be very safe.
You don't see the words come in. It's all voice prompts. It reads
you the messages and then it asks, 'would you like to reply?'
Say 'yes' and then you speak the message out. We're quietly taking
a leadership role in this space."
Hyundai
says Apple CarPlay will be expanded to their whole line of cars
and SUVs in a year or so. What
about the data? That is something you'll have to work out with
your wireless provider.
