LOS
ANGELES -- While some automakers showed off beefier engines
with more horsepower and torque, Volvo introduced a new line of
four-cylinder, Drive-E powertrains at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto
Show. They will produce less emissions than a V6 or V8 engine. The
2015 Volvo V60 will come with one of those 2.0-liter, Drive-E engines
producing 240 hp and 258 lb-ft. of torque. It will go from zero
to 60 mph in just 6.1 seconds. The new V60 sportswagon will achieve
a combined 29 mpg, according to Volvo.
"We're
just a couple of months away from bringing back an iconic model
to U.S. showrooms," said Tony Nicolosi, president and CEO of
Volvo Cars North America. "When people hear Volvo, they often
think wagon. This is the 2015 Volvo V60 sportswagon. It's
a proven sales success in other markets around the globe. It combines
the handling and styling of a dynamic sports sedan with added versatility.
We believe we will attract many more customers to our showroom and
give them a first look at our redesigned lineup."
The new
V60 sportswagon will come with adaptive cruise control, adaptive
high beams that automatically dim for oncoming traffic, blind-spot
monitoring, cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane-keeping
assist, parallel parking assist and collision mitigation, even pedestrian
detection with automatic braking. Other features include heated
front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel and optional sport
seats.
"Drive-E
marks the beginning of Volvo's transition to only offering four-cylinder
engines, that will reduce the power and torque of a typical six-cylinder
engine, but with much better fuel economy," Nicolosi added.
"In some cases, we expect 26 percent better fuel economy. Drive-E
powertrains combine the latest technology to deliver real world
improvements to fuel efficiency and performance utilizing turbocharged
or turbocharged, four-cylinder engine married to a new eight-speed
automatic transmission. Initial offerings reducing 240 or 302 hp.
We are targeting best-in-class fuel efficiency in the neighborhood
of 38 mpg highway, 240 horsepower."
This
vehicle has been very popular in Europe and now it's headed for
America for the first time in January. Only 4,000 of these will
be made initially. Production will be expanded thereafter.
The
president and CEO also mentioned that Volvo will reveal the next
generation XC90 one year from now at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show.
