LOS
ANGELES -- Honda
first sold the HR-V crossover SUV overseas beginning in 1999.
It was sold in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines,
the Pacific Rim and for its home market of Japan. The main criticism
of the HR-V was the lack of a diesel engine option. Production
of the HR-V was discontinued in 2003 for the three-door model
and the five-door model ended in 2006.
The
Japanese automaker showed off the Urban SUV Concept at the 2013
North American International Auto Show. That design was turned
into the 2016 Honda HR-V crossover SUV, which made its North American
debut at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show.
"Today,
we are excited to introduce an all-new crossover that will complete
an incredible and unbeatable line-up of SUVs," said Jeff
Conrad, general manager of the Honda division at American Honda
Motor Co. "The gateway to CR-V and Pilot will now begin with
a versatile and dynamic, all-new Honda vehicle. Ladies and gentlemen,
please welcome the 2016 Honda HR-V. It's everything a small crossover
should be with a dynamic sculpting, vibrant character lines of
a sporty coupe. Anchored in the confident capable stance of an
SUV.
The HR-V
is equipped with a 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine
producing 117 horsepower and 106 ft.-lb. of torque. Fuel economy
numbers have not yet been released because it is an all-new vehicle.
Safety features include Bluetooth HandsFreeLink, multi-angle rearview
camera, Honda LaneWatch and an SMS text message function. It also
comes with smart entry with push-button start, SiriusXM satellite
radio, HD radio, a 7-inch display with touch-screen settings,
automatic climate control and 17-inch alloy wheels.
Conrad
added: "This efficient, fun-to-drive package is perfect for
the active lifestyle customers who need a capable vehicle to meet
the demands of daily driving while providing the flexibility for
weekend fun in the city, the country, the mountains or wherever
their imagination takes them. Need to haul a bike or maybe a dog
crate? HR-V's got you covered with more than 58 cubic feet of
cargo space in utility mode. The HR-V is a virtual Swiss Army
knife of capability."
Look
for the all-new 2016 Honda HR-V will go on sale in America this
spring. Pricing has not yet been announced. However, it will cost
be less than the Honda CR-V, which starts at $23,320 before destination
charges.
"Today,
Automobile magazine named the all-new Honda Fit to it's
list of all stars," said John Mendel, executive vice president
at American Honda Motor Co. "As we speak, Car and Driver
magazine is announcing its list of its 10 Best Cars in America.
For the record breaking 29th time, includes the Honda Accord.
We're in contention for more accolades before the year is out.
Fit made the short list for North American Car of the Year. We're
constantly looking forward to continue this momentum. Strengthen
our line-up and create new value for the next generation of customers."
Stay
tuned for the Honda FCV (fuel cell vehicle) concept to debut at
the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this January.
